Mary J. Blige featuring Drake - "The One"
I know everyone's still talking about DJ AM, quite rightly, but check out this great documentary about the early roots in the development of NYC's club music culture and another leegendary DJ, Larry Levan. This is a MUST-view if you care about DJ-ing and the history of black, club music. I know Jay Smooth just did a show on this sound over the weekend. Not sure if its archived anywhere though?? [note: this is actually a 9-part video playlist but part 9 is unfortunately missing]

Blogger and website support has been high; music has been been leaked and well-received from singles to mixtapes. All kinds of videos, interviews, BTS & trailers for multiple songs, have circulated around. Unfortunately, I still think you need a traditional hit in the real world of radio and television to put up any kind of real sales numbers and as far as I'm aware, Rae does not have that? Given that reality, my prediction is that he'll do better than Slaughterhouse but somewhere far short of Fabolous. Approaching Jada numbers (which were a freakish anomaly IMHO) is not even a discussion unless something really weird happens between now and September:

In case you overlooked it in yesterday's post. Here's the skinny:
"On July 1st, 2009 Manifesto brought over 30,000 Torontonians to Yonge & Dundas Square to celebrate the life, music & magic of the one and only Michael Jackson. Six heavy-weight Toronto deejays - Starting from Scratch, Son of S.O.U.L., DJ L’oqenz, Mensa, Sean Sax and Jason Palma - played their hearts out to one of the biggest crowds of their lives, laying down the larger than life legacy of the King of Pop. Watch the videos and download the 3 hr set for free."

"To help ease the pain suffered from members here on KevinNottingham.com, we held a beat contest. Producers came from everywhere to sample their favorite MJ song and to help pay tribute.
Today we celebrate the birth of Michael Jackson; he would have been 51. Out of the hundreds of beats that were submitted, we narrowed it down to the best 25. Then I let me man DJ Grain go to town, mix them and put his spin on it. Grab the mix after the cut. As a bonus, I’ve included a download of all the winning beats, unmixed."

Upcoming installments of MICHAEL JACKSON: THE REMIX SUITE series feature remixes by everyone from Akon, Swizz Beatz, and Q-Tip to Ryan Leslie, Rodney Jerkins, and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 (! ed note: not at least Travis Barker??), among many others. I hope it's not the case but circumstaneces and this tweet from him suggest he may have taken his own Life. What a sad, terrible waste if he did. Dude got knocked for his celabrity party DJ gigs and girlfriends but he had legit party rockin' skills. To wit:
What a bummer as people get ready to celebrate Michael Jackson's born day this weekend to lose another creative talent this way. Adam 'DJ AM' Goldstein, R.I.P....

From the long-lost (but actually much-bootlegged) Q-tip album, Kamaal the Abstract album. I think Tip was kind of ahead of his time with this album. Maybe people will be more open to it now after the success of last year's well-received The Renaissance album? Check these tracks out:

Hot or not? I think this is OK but I see it getting kind of killed online. The only person who seems to be getting beat up worse than Hov right now is Timbaland for leaking all those BP3 tracks (although I'm not sure he produced this one?).

Hot or not? More importantly: where the F-CK has Missy Elliott been for like the last million years?? Homegirl just up and disappeared and now is back - on this record?? OK....

Of course more leaks from Blueprint 3. I'm seeing mixed response on this one online but listen carefully: Hov's spitting some slick sh-t. This is basically an "I Used to Love H.E.R." type track (I think?):
Jay-Z - "Venus vs. Mars" [yousendit mp3 download link] (prod. by Tim 'Timbaland aka The Sieve' Mosely)
Also: nice XXL cover coming next month (swiped from XXLmag.com). I had to change it up - it felt like some variation on the BP3 cover had been gracing like every third post around these parts for the past few days.
[mp3 via Nah Right / TSS]
This is all over the blogs so I don't think I need to provide too much in the way of background except to say this is from the soundtrack to the Lebron James documentary, More Than A Game. All I will add is that this is unmastered and you should cop the final mastered version when it drops tomorrow (apparently not in stores now per the artwork above). Check it, if you just stepped out from under your rock for the first time today:

New track by Raekwon but not from OB4CL2. This track is actually from the DJ Fresh album, The Tonite Show. A little cleaner and more West Coast, underground-sounding than the stuff from Rae's album. Ya dig though?

I don't usually do these kind of press release-y posts but it's Massive Attack! Horace Andy, Martina Topley-Bird and TV On The Radio's Tunde Adebimpe?? That alone is sounding epic. But a full album with cameos from Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval, Topley-Bird, Adebimpe and Guy Garvey is coming in February too?? Wow....

I caught this chick at one of The Roots' Highline residency events earlier in the Spring and she blew me away. Singer, rapper and violinist with swag & presence for days, she's the total package. The track here is more on the Rihanna pop side of things but she can blow and spit (!) - check her MySpace for her take on "A Milli" - for real and rip it up the violin as well. Plus a 'tribute' track by Cardan (which, even though Cardan's my dude, I kind of thought twice about including 'cos the lyrical content isn't really ahem, 'standard' tribute/eulogy fare):
Cardan feat. Aaliyah – "Overdrive" [yousendit mp3 download link from PDS via Nah Right]
Next, some 'rare' interview footage [via Grand Good]:
From the Age Ain't Nothing But A Number era.
And last, a few of her most memorable music videos:
"One in a Million" (prod. Timbaland):
"Are You That Somebody":
And finally, "Rock the Boat", the video she had just completed shooting when she tragically died in a plane crash:
Damn, had she been alive, Aaliyah would've only just turned 30 today. Lost so young. We miss ya, baby girl....
More music that got lost in my inbox. New Jack Hustle is Shawn Jackson & Newman (who.he??). This is a video for their official debut album, Soundcheck which came out last October on TRES records. Is the album any good?? [via Sweeney Kovar]
Fes Taylor feat. Inspectah Deck & Solomon Childs - "Shoot Up The Party (Official Remix)" [mp3 links: zshare stream/download | yousendit]

Thanks to Alex at Killer Beez Promo for all the links and for re-upping the download link to the Raekwon Cuban Revlotuion mixtape which, if you can believe it, I didn't just download immediately, when it dropped last week!
I'm f-cking with this hardbody too. I don't know much about this duo (and neither apparently, did the guy from the promo company who sent it to me - er, WTF??!?!!). All I know is if you like dirty lo-fi, fuzzed-out psychedelic/bluesy guitars over hip hop-inspired breakbeat-style drums, you need to get at this IMMEDIATELY. And it's not a one-off either - other tracks on their MySpace seem to follow a similar pattern. I'd someone like say Mark Ronson should produce these guys but he might make their sound too polished and pop!
Update: apparently they're working with Aesop Rock which explains the hip hop beats now.
Listen: Dirty Ghosts - "Steamboat to Concord" [yousendit mp3 download link]

I f-cks with this solely on the basis of her sampling the 80's new wave hit, "Echo Beach" by Canadian group, Martha & The Muffins. Next of the black chicks doing beatastic alternative pop in the wake of Santigold, Janelle Monáe, J*Davey, Ebony Bones (did I post on her yet?), Joya Bravo (or her?), Melanie Fiona and yes, even Rihanna? I'm cosigning this movement CRAZY!

Get ready for the blog posting tsunami that will be the inevitable 'leaks' leading up to the release of the much-anticipated Blueprint 3 album. Expect this to happen at least 5-6 more times by my best estimation.
For the record, I think this track is actually pretty decent. Much closer to the spirit of peak-era period Hov when he had the clubs on smash with joints by Timbaland (behind the decks for this track) and Pharrell than much of his recent output.
Jay-Z feat. Drake - "Off That" [yousendit mp3 download link jacked from YouHeardThatNew.com via I Luv Lola, heads up: Rap Radar]
Yeah, yeah, I know the Hov track with Drake just leaked. I saw it on Rap Radar, went to have dinner, came back and saw every other rap blog had posted it. I'm sure there's no shortage of places for you to cop it from so what's the rush? I'm gonna get to it but also wanted to put this up too. It's the first leak from the DJ Noodles' new mash-up/blends mixtape project, Jay-Z: Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn Part III clearly put together to capitalize on the hype for BP3.
Jay-Z - "Say You Will 2" feat. Rihanna [yousendit mp3 download link]
The component parts are pretty obvious but they're all put together pretty artfully, no? The full tape drops next week. Meanwhile check Noodles' Sirius/XM Hip Hop Nation show, "Fix Your Face Radio" or his weekly mixshow on WLLD if you're in the Tampa area. He's also got a couple joints on the upcoming Pitbull Rebelution album dropping next month.

I dunno what happened to this chica! When she started out she was baically gonna be a milquetoast uber-pop/world music blend of post-Fugees Wyclef and what Rihanna was doing at the start of her career. Now she's making tracks called "Now I’m that B-tch" that are knock-off's of current-era Rihanna!!! Check it and tell me if she's going in the right direction:

For the record, as I said here, I think their first week sales were actually pretty good for them. I mean, c'mon: non of these dudes are proven commerical entities except for Joe Budden who had a semi-hit album five years ago but whose profile since then has completely diminished except for within super-underground hip hop circles. Anyone who thought they were gonna do much better than they did was kind of deluded. Sorry, Dallas!

I heard there might be recyled verses on this one? I can't even really be mad at that - I mean: how many songs has this dude Weezy made in the past 3-4 years. It was bound to happen at least once or twice. Song is still cool to me either way.
