The best leak Mickey has done in a while although I love how he disavows being a hipster rapper in interviews then shouts out every hipster rapper out right now in this track:

Remember that Mickey is also peforming at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival on July 12.

Heard while in Dallas this past weekend:
Big Tuck feat. Fat-B - "Not a Stain on Me" [YSI mp3 D/L link]
Kind of reminds me of the end of the Beastie Boys's "Posse In Effect" (?) with those crowd chants in the background....

Sidebar: does this e-flyer remind you of how back in the day Motown used to put white people on the covers of their albums so they wouldn't offend the racist tendencies of retailers and consumers in the South?
Shot on my digicam so not the best quality, sound or video-wise. Trust me, the real thing is gonna look crazy though.

Homeboy just spun at a post-BET Awards party for T-Pain at a ridiculous Hollywood Hills mansion apparently also used for the finale of the MTV show, 'The Hills' (and supposedly owned by a 28 year old dude - I hate the guy and I've never even met him!) although truth be told, the party only got really crunk when T-Pain got on the 1's and 2's and started spinning himself. Real talk, Pain is no joke on the set!

As you can see I've been too busy to post. I'm off to Dallas for the weekend and then off to this next week. All I really wanna do is sleep though....

In the Heights - I told y'all already: F-CK with it!
"Hundreds of Taliban fighters have swarmed into a strategically important district just outside Kandahar, the biggest city in southern Afghanistan, apparently in a push for control just days after 400 Taliban members escaped in a spectacular breakout from the Kandahar prison, officials said." "His lifelong dream of becoming a soldier had, in the end, come to this for Isaac Stevens: 28, penniless, in a wheelchair, fending off the sexual advances of another man in a homeless shelter." [Click here for more from amNY.com]

Lil Wayne feat. Jay-Z & Chris Brown - "A Milli (Hot 97 Remix)" [YSI mp3 link]
This is not on official remix obviously, just some Frankenstein Pro Tools sh-t of some of the freestyles out there. Probably the Beat of the Year already at this point though, right? Is the producer right though in saying that Wayne could have done the beat more justice? And do you think Wayne cares either way? He is officially the biggest rapper on the planet now. Enjoy it (now re-upped, one time only)!
Bonus: David Banner feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes "La La La Remix (Final Rough Mix)" [YSI mp3 link] - this sh-t is banoodles! "Started out hustling... ended up ballin'... N-gga, I'm the sh-t, get the f-ck up out my toilet!" LOL....

Been out for a few days so most of y'all probably copped already. Honestly I kind of got bored halfway through listening to this and turned on Tha Carter III again (or something). Anyway, I think N.W.A did it better with just one song on "N-ggaz 4 Life."
Wasn't homeboy part of the post-post-50 wave of East Coast MC after Maino, Red Cafe, Grafh, Jae Millz and a bunch of other dudes who are basically irrelevant now?

McCain Rips Supreme Court Decision on Guantanamo - calls it, it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
He was a regular part of my Sunday morning TV viewing (which probably gives you a good idea of how f-cking old I am!) and it was always great watching him dismantle many a smug politicians' talking points and BS. Not to speak ill of the dead though but will we now never know what his real role was in the Plamegate affair?

Who apparently recently declared that, "The DJ is Dead!" This video is worth watching for his hip hop chess set and for the following lines, "[Jermaine], you a BDS A&R. You've turned an icon [Janet] into a Bus It Baby?! Change your name to Jerlaine Dupri and your label to Slow, Slow Death!" He also goes in on the internet and blogs. I've been meaning to post something from Gucci Mane's Back to the Traphouse album for a minute now cos even though it came out at the end of last year, I think it's one of the most slept-on hip hop albums of the past year. As a matter of fact, until The Cool Kids and Wayne joints leaked/came out, it was pretty much the only hip hop album I was listening to regularly (sorry, Roots!). If you dig Jeezy's trap hop lyricism and TI's southern swaggerific flow, then Gucci is definitely for you but for those of you who missed it, here's a joint from it to check out:
Gucci Mane feat. Trey Songz - "Drink it Straight" [YSI mp3 D/L link]

S'funny, I got a copy of the brand new Verve Remixed 4 album in the mail this week which I checked out and thought was great! Then I saw a listing in the amNewYork free paper for the Crest Hardware Art Show opening in Williamsburg today and noticed that the cover art from the album is one of the featured pieces in the show. Coincidence? I think not. Get out and enjoy some of this great sun we're having this weekend by going to see the show. And if not check out some of Verve Remixed 4 here:

I'm trying to minimize the amount of stuff I recycle from other blogs like Eskay who I jack from frequently, but this song (produced by Polow Da Don)is f-ckin' great and a must-post:

Me personally, I think I might be trying to catch the secret MySpace show by Janelle Monáe that day instead.
BTW though: who's Heavy that's apparently gonna be busy this weekend?

Don't know much about this dude but there's an interview with him here (although can't 100% say for sure that this is actually the same Vic D!).
The next "Chicken Noodle Soup"? Allegedly the hottest record in Philly:
DJ Diamond Kuts feat. Dwizz & Pumpkin -"Salt, Peppa, Ketchup & Hot Sauce (Remix)" [YSI mp3 link]
From DJ Diamond Kuts' forthcoming HerStory In The Making album.
This is a GREAT-looking video and the "Paid in Full" jack on the beat and by Wayne in his verse is appreciated too. Best R&B clip out besides the latest Ne-Yo one.

Lil Mama - "A Milli (Freestyle)" [YSI mp3 link]
Proving once again that she's a real spitter and not just a novelty or kiddie rapper.
Labels: Lil Mama
Blog and hipster hype be damned - The Bake Sale is actually really legit good! If I have one major criticism it's that the album (or is it EP?) is a bit samey sounding after a while although it makes for a quick listen over its barely 30-plus minutes & 10 tracks and I've been playing it repeatedly over the past few days which is something I haven't done with too many albums recently. If you miss that minimalist 808, drums 'n synth effect sound a la Mantronix or early Rick Rubin Def Jam productions then this record is for you 'cos The Cool Kids is bringin' '88 back.
Listen: The Cool Kids - "What Up Man" [audio streams: windows | quicktime | real]

The most polarizing MC in the game takes it back to the Stretch N Bob era with a Swizz-produced Electric Prunes/David Axelrod beat jack.
Lil Wayne - "Dr. Carter" (prod. by Swizz Beats) [YSI mp3 link]
Who says this kid can't do 'real' hip hop?? BTW: I really like The Carter III, haters be damned although he was pretty horrific at Summer Jam. Album in stores next week (I think?).
N/h on this post but I saw this show last week with my mom who was in town and it was incredible. This TV spot doesn't really do it justice and I'm no expert but I have to say this was the best Broadway show I've ever seen and totally deserving of being the most nominated production at this year's Tony Awards. I think it would make an amazing movie a la Chicago too if done right.
There's a heavy hip hop element to the show (i.e. there's rapping, which is actually pretty decent, as well as singing) so for heads who would never f-ck with this kind of thing, I'm telling you, put your prejudices aside and check it out. This may sell the show short and be a lazy reference because of the heavy Latin element in both, but this is really like West Side Story for the hip hop era. As I was watching it, it made me think of all the great cinematic, A-list hip hop artists like Nas, Dre, Jay-Z etc. who would probably be inspired to do amazing things with this artform if they saw this musical.
Had a great weekend too: I saw your boy Usain 'Lightning' Bolt CRUSH the 100m world record under less-than-optimal conditions on Saturday night at the Reebok Grand Prix track meet and then made it to Summer Jam last night as well. I'll get into that once I find some good video links to base a post around though....
