Pray that Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures not be the final music we ever hear from Guru
Not because it's horrible music per se (although it's not a patch on even the worst Gangstarr album), but because this wasn't exactly the post I had in mind when I got the email last week from PR firm, Yo! Promotions announcing that Guru's Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures album was to be given away for free for a limited time period.
What was to be bonanza of free music has turned into a Get Well Soon, Guru post after learning of the disturbing recent turn of events. As I said over at Miss Info's, "Get well soon, Guru. We need you in the game and its FAR too early for you to leave us. I was just playing The Ownerz album the other day. A highly underrated album in the great Gangstarr catalog…." Despite their differences, I was hoping Preme and Guru would reunite at some point and give us at least one more dose of that 'real' hip hop (you know what I mean by that) we've come to expect from this acclaimed duo.

"After a short break, we’re back with the latest edition of Okayplayer TV. Who better to bring back OKPTV than one of our most favorite groups, Reflection Eternal. Live from the set of RE’s upcoming video, “In This World,” OKP chops it up with Kweli and Hi-Tek about The RE:Union, why they took so long to come out with a new album, gettin’ props from Jay-Z (and turning it into a hook), and more. Lupe Fiasco - Kick, Push ((Pretty) Girls & Lasers Remix) by prettygirlsandlasers
Obviously "Kick, Push" is not a new song but this electro remix of the track by (Pretty) Girls & Lasers is. Not mind-blowing but worth sharing and a check-out for those into this kind of thing. Theuep presents DJ Bling - The Life of the Party Vol. II
Another club and electro-style DJ mix. Solid but not as much on the hip hop tip as the MIx Mason one I posted yesterday and not officially COC-cosigned. Lots of stuff you've heard getting caned in clubs over the past year or so but expertly mixed (or at least constructed via Pro-tools?). There's little new or surprising to hear in it except what sounds like a custom version of "I'm the Ish" made by DJ Class (?) just for DJ Bling. Still its a great listen and as Bling and his Theuep (The Urban Experience) crew say:
"Do you need some music to help get your weekend started on the right foot? Are you looking for some upbeat jams to listen to as you get pumped for an action packed weekend? Download DJ Bling’s Life of the Party Mix! It’s 60+ minutes of in your face house and electro that will guarantee to get your blood pumping for the weekend. Download this hot mix for free now and become the life of the party!!"

DFA Records/ XL Recordings present: Friendly Fires vs. Holy Ghost - On Board!
OnBoard by Girlie Action
"It started off as a drunken conversation at Corsica’s Calvi Rocks festival in July 2009. Friendly Fires had just played live, Holy Ghost had just finished DJing, and in the post-gig haze the decision was made by each band to cover one of the other’s songs.
Eight months later and here are the quite brilliant results. Friendly Fires were the first to honour the agreement, finishing 2009 in the studio with a superb take on the DFA duo’s ‘Hold On’ classic. Meanwhile, Holy Ghost’s cover of ‘On Board’ took a little longer – sessions vanished, vocal tracks mysteriously vanished, hard drives were fractured and somewhere in the middle of it, the duo lost their close friend Jerry Fuchs, whose awe-inspiring drumming is at the core of this version of ‘On Board’. The results are equally special."
I dig this! DFA still got it!

The Connoisseurs of Culture present The Mix Mason - Shameless Self Promotion mix
The Mix Mason :: Shameless Self Promotion by mixmason Alt. links: sendspace
A 'Bangin' Live Promo Mix' indeed...
I've supported this dude before (see HERE and HERE) and now I'm proud to premiere The Mix Mason's latest mix project in conjunction with Benhameen and Stone under the Connoisseurs of Culture banner.
Its not even technically an 'official' mix, just something he put together as a calling card to send around to booking agents but its FIYA still and needs to be shared properly! With his trademark blend of hip hop, electro, house, bmore and other current club sounds, Mason is spinning all the sounds that are hot in the clubs nowadays but its his selection and mixing skills, which are ridiculous, that set him apart. Mark my words, you're gonna be hearing a lot about and from this kid in the future.
Here he is on the mix:
"Its a 100%-live mix to showcase my abilities, flavor, and style. No drops, editing, mastering, or cleaning-up. Thanks for listening."

Video: Questlove on the 'Funky African', Fela Kuti
Clip description:
"?uestlove from The Roots, now an associate producer on the hit musical Fela! on Broadway, talks about when he first discovered Fela Kuti's music, and walks us through Fela's influence in yesterday and today's hip-hop -- including works by Mos Def, Macy Gray, D'Angelo, X-Clan, and Leader of the New School."
Fela is up there with James Brown, Bob Marley, George Clinton and Ray Charles in terms of being a pillar of black music and pioneering and becoming an icon for an entire genre of music, in his case Afrobeat. If you haven't heard his music before, check this:
"Knitting Factory Records will be re-releasing Fela's entire catalogue. The Chop 'N Quench batch, containing 6 CDs (9 albums total) from 1964-1974, is available digitally and physically now. Buy them from Fela.net to get a deal better than you'll find anywhere else!"

This ain't strictly my thing but it sounds like the kind of hip hop that's winnning right now. The lost track from DJ Khaled's Victory album? Here's the official plug:
"After his successful first single "Money in my pocket", Canadian rapper P Reign returns with another smash hit. This time, combining efforts with producer T-Minus [Ludacris' "How Low"] P Reign delivers "In My Hood" a catchy yet powerful song reminiscing about his youth growing up in the hood. "It's a tale of personal experiences," P Reign states. "I know people can relate to it." Having worked with several producers in Canada already, getting together with T-Minus was a no brainer. "T- minus to me is one of the top producers in Canada and we've both heard so many good things about each other so we were both excited to finally get to work together.""

New music: Rhymefest & Skyzoo - Crack The Code
Rhymefest murders another track! Here's DJ RTC on "Crack The Code" taken from Closed Sessions Vol. 1 project dropping on March 2:
"I really dug into Skyzoo's material while making the first Brainiac Mixtape with Naledge. He put two Skyzoo tracks on the mix and I was more than impressed. I went back into Sky's catalog and eagerly awaited the release of his debut LP, The Salvation. Shortly before the album's release, I had the chance to interview Skyzoo and he told me that he heard about Closed Sessions, and our Dimes and Dozens party in which we bring out of town artists into Chicago and have them perform at our monthly event. He expressed interest in doing the same and I was definitely with it. We organized a show for Skyzoo at The Darkroom, and setup a Closed Session for him the following day. Virgil and Ruben took Sky all around the city before his show, and when he hit SoundScape we could all tell that Chicago had made an impression on him. Rhymefest ended up just being at the studio during Skyzoo's session, the two hit it off very quickly with help from this K-Salaam and Beatnick track and the concept for "Crack The Code" was born. Skyzoo's verse centers on the intricacies of Chicago, while Rhymefest raps about the nature of New York City. It's an homage to two great homes for Hip Hop, and a pairing of two great emcees."

Click the image above to see the full-size art.
Well I prepped you about this dropping earlier but here's the first leak track from rapper, T.Shirt's collab project with producer, Darvin Silva, the Tan-Face Children EP entitled, "Monday Massacre":
T.Shirt & Darvin Silva - "Monday Massacre" [usershare mp3 links: stream | download]
Here's T.shirt's take on the track:
"In a first-ever collaboration with The Connoisseurs Of Culture (a progressive media collective comprised of The Couch Sessions, Different Kitchen and Pleasedontstare.com) T.Shirt & Darvin Silva come together to bring you their debut EP, Tan-Face Children.
Think interesting, and colorful T.Shirt verses over underground, worldly beats hand-picked and mixed by retro/electro king, Darvin Silva. We kick things off with "Monday Massacre", a frighteningly strong track, produced by Mr. Oizo, which puts you right in the pocket of what these guys are thinking musically. T.Shirt takes you down to what sounds like an illegal dogfight in a London basement. Yeah, that's what the f-ck these guys are on right now. Tan-Face Children drops March 9th world-wide."
Yeah, THAT's how we're gonna be doing it under the COC banner: riding with cats who are trying to do stuff that's new, creative and interesting, not only in just music but video, art, photography, literature, film, comics. Whatever! If you've ever f-cked me here at The Kitchen, Stone over at The Couch Sessions or Benhameen and his crew at PleaseDontStare.com and dug the aesthetic we've been cultivating on our sites,

For those that are unaware, Jerome (aka Rome) is an OG blogger who's been doing it big and eclectic at the Better Than Yours blog for many years. Its been a pleasure to see him chronicle his rise from getting his music collection together and spinning friends' house parties to becoming a fixture on the DC-area hipster/streetwear community party & club circuit and starting to tour too. Respect!
It's a COC-thang!

The Connoisseurs of Culture present T.Shirt & Darvin Silva - Tan-Face Children EP
Click the image above to see the full-size art.
OK, this is something new that The Kitchen has been working on for the past couple of months. Check the science...
"The Connoisseurs of Culture is a media collective comprised of the critcially-acclaimed and popular music & lifestyle websites, The Couch Sessions, Different Kitchen and Please Don't Stare.
The goal of the COC is to brand & present the work of musicians, producers, DJ's, video & film directors, visual artists and other creative types whose art we believe in and want to support on a deeper level than just basic posts on our respective sites.
A 'Connoisseurs of Culture Presents' project will be rolled out as a fully 'Branded' project with a comprehensive, integrated launch campaign leveraging all key social media platforms and the combined might of the collective social networks and readership of the COC network."
First up to bat is New York-based, up-and-coming rapper, T.shirt. Some of you may already be familiar with him from his "Dear Sade," "I Won't Go (Freestyle
"Over the last two months Retro Electro DJ/Producer Darvin Silva, and New York City rapper T.Shirt have been working on their full and realized debut EP together, Tan-Face Children. The name derives from the opening line of the famous Walt Whitman poem “Pioneers! O Pioneers!” where the poet beckons the burning youth “Come my tan-face children”. He’s speaking of the Western world, the youth of a generation working in the sun for long hours thus becoming, “tan-faced”. It’s a poetic and just way to describe the hard-working famous kids from Queens.
The chemistry in the music is electrifying. Darvin’s penchant for finding the “dirty, rap shit” in say, a mid-tempo french house song is as strong as can be. It is said that where T.Shirt thrives is where he’s allowed to be different, finding new flows, and concepts. That’s exactly the type of platform working with a talent like Darvin Silva brings. Where else can you find a gifted and gritty New York rapper spitting verses on one of the hardest beats you ever heard, by France’s own Mr. Oizo."
Click HERE to read the full Press Release on the Tan-Face Children EP at the brand new The Connoisseurs of Culture tumblr site.
Tonight at midnight will see the leak of the first track from the project, "Monday Massacre" so check back to be the first to cop it! Digital-only copies of the FULL Tan-Face Children will be available free of charge March 9, through www.illrapper.com and www.darvinsilva.com presented by The Connoisseurs of Culture.

New music: Phenomenal Handclap Band - Baby
I've covered The Phenomenal Handclap Band previously on The Kitchen. This joint is a little less on the downtown disco-punk vibe but is very soulful. Recommended if you dig the El Michels Affair or Mayer Hawthorne maybe? I like it and I even saw these guys perform live at Santos in NYC last summer but "You'll Disappear" is still the highlight of their short career to date, no?
