New Music: Gilles Peterson Presents Worldwide – A Celebration Of His Syndicated Radio Show

"Music lover, record collector, DJ, broadcaster… Perhaps most famous for his much loved genre-exploding radio shows on BBC Radio 1 (and 17 other stations around the world including Japan’s leading commercial station J-Wave), Gilles Peterson’s insatiable appetite for new music undoubtedly lies at the heart of his success. Worldwide is 10 years young and fresher than ever – a benchmark for broadcasters the world over.
Ten years in the making, this compilation is a tribute to a truly groundbreaking show, music and a serious music personality who is ahead of the curve and debuts awesome records on his show before anyone else. Gilles Peterson is a truly revered international club and radio DJ and one of music’s foremost tastemakers (possibly the most well known in the whole world) in a world dominated by style over substance.
The focus of this compilation is to present to its audience not just a DJ's favorite selection or songs that stood the test of time but it represents a great collection of songs and grooves premiered on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide show before any other station in the world. It’s about music that Gilles has helped popularize across the world on his show which is syndicated in 15 countries. It’s a musical journey for DJ's and radio listeners across the world.
In addition to his Worldwide radio show, Gilles is also the head of Talking Loud Records where he introduced the world to Jamiroquai, Roni Size, 4 Hero, Courtney Pine, Brand New Heavies, Galliano and many more. He was a key founding member of the late 80’s Acid Jazz boom and recently set-up a new record label, Brownswood Recordings, to sign and develop exciting new talent as well as putting on his Worldwide Awards every year in London and the Worldwide festival every summer in the south of France. His compilation albums have become legendary and he continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world playing a unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere."

HipHopisRead.com & Lyrics To Go presents Nas - Illmatic: the Samples

Ivan (with an assist from Lyrics to Go) does it yet again!
"What can I say about this album that hasn't already been expounded upon by music journalists and institutional scholars alike? Illmatic is to hip hop what Miles Davis's Kind of Blue is to jazz: a quintessential centerpiece to its respective genre. Dallas Penn summed it up quite nicely: "The Sun, Moon and stars along with the spirit of Rakim Allah came together to form this rap music manifesto masterpiece.""
If you don't know about Illmatic, I don't even know what to say except this is probably one of the ten hip hop albums you ABSOLUTELY need to listen to. Once you've done that, come back here and learn about the original source music sampled that built this masterpiece.

Throwback Music: The SSO Orchestra - Faded Lady from Strange Games & Funky Things vol. 5 mixed by DJ Spinna

Another BBE records-related post. This time a track from Volume 5 of the label's excellent Strange Games & Funky Things compilation series due for release next month:
The SSO Orchestra - 'Faded Lady' [mp3 audio stream]
Real heads will recognize that as the basis for the track, "I Went For Mine" from Diamond D's classic debut album Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop. Younger heads maybe more so for its use more recently in the failed Rally New York anthem, "NY Sh-t" by Busta Rhymes.
"The Strange Games series which began in the summer of 1997, represents the blueprint for modern R&B and rap music. It joins the dots between 70s soul, 80s rare groove and 90s mass market hip hop. This compilation contains a wide variety of styles of tracks, from classic dance-floor fillers as well as lesser known delights. A more accessible diggers delight if you wish with an emphasis on quality track and not just songs worth having for a 2 second sample.
Featuring a much more worldly selection than its predecessors - tracks by the multi-platinum selling War to Sylvia (Robinson, founder of Sugarhill Records) sit side by side with world music underground icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of compilations that appears to have the widest appeal of all BBE's compilations and proves to be even better by the fact that there is a bonus mixed CD by the one and only Dj Spinna!"

Rare Groove/Soul/Hip Hop DJ Mix: Chris Read - bbe Mixtape Competition 2010
I normally try and post more jazz, rare groove and reggae-esque vibes on a Sunday (as well as some news and current affairs type stuff) so I figure a quality mix of music in those genres as well hip hop based on samples from them, especially as done by UK 'megamix' specialist Chris Read, should be OK too!
Here's his plug for the mix:
"BBE is, I can say with some confidence, my favourite record label of recent years in terms of consistency and quality of output. From legendary modern day artists such as Dilla and Pete Rock to compilations of obscure and forgotten gems, it's a label that covers a lot of ground and does it all with style.
So it almost goes without saying that putting this mix together was an absolute pleasure. The toughest thing was not deciding what to include but what to leave out. I probably could have made a dozen mixtapes with the pile of records I pulled out before getting started and it would have been simple enough to produce a complete mix of music from any one of the label's many genres, but I wanted to try and represent the label's full range.
What I ended up with is a fairly quick paced mix which passes through modern soul, hip hop, funk, boogie, disco, a touch of house, reggae, nu jazz, vocal jazz and dancefloor jazz pretty much in that order with a few little surprises along the way. A mix that's so varied is always going to be a little risky as not everybody shares the same range of tastes but I think I've accurately portrayed the label's range of output and had some fun in the process and that, after all, is the most important thing. If you've checked my previous mixtapes, you'll know what to expect in terms of presentation and mixing style, and if not - well here's your chance... I hope you enjoy!"

Throwback Mixtape: Behold the Destroyer – Lamborghini Loafers

Love this! How can you not f-ck with a mixtape that has the following description:
"The year is 1985, Chico Avaraldo — the biggest gun runner in Miami — has double crossed you for the last time. He’s sent his goons to rub you out and kidnap your girlfriend to sell into white slavery. They shot you in the back and torched your modest, albeit palatial estate. Left you for dead. They shoulda finished the job.
First mistake.
You jump in your Lamborghini and speed down the high way, doing 120 miles an hour. As your italian loafers press down on the accelerator you grip the wheel tightly, consumed with a desire for revenge — the sweetest of digestifs. As you hug the turns of the moonlit city streets you approach Avaraldo’s club. The lamborghini spins to a stop in front of the entrance. You open up the gullwing doors and jump out with BOTH of your Uzis blazing (you have two Uzis on you at all time). Avaraldo’s ninja bodyguards weren’t prepared for such a brash move.
Last mistake.
You enter the club and find Avaraldo holding your girl at gunpoint. It ends now.
NO MORE MISTAKES.
You know Avaraldo is most likely coked up, so he’ll be twitchy. This must be executed perfectly. He’ll never expect you to shoot your own girlfriend in the kneecap to distract him. But just as you prepare to sacrifice her flash dancing career for a life with you. Avaraldo shoots her! You. Heart broken. Kill everyone in the club. It’s over. As you hold her lifeless body in your arms you think back on the good times.
The dancing. The love. The lobster. The Fashion. The sex.
This is what plays…"

Throwback Music: Mark Capanni – I Believe in Miracles (aka the ORIGINAL version)

Mark Capanni – I Believe in Miracles [mp3 download link]
I'm a major fan of this song no matter who does it so I FLIPPED when I read this over at Steady Bloggin':
"…with the blessing of Mark Capanni himself, here it is as it should be, the ORIGINAL VERSION of the Jackson Sisters classic rare groove anthem ‘I Believe in Miracles’…
Sublime Axelrod-style folk jazz orchestration backs Capanni’s carefree yet poignant vocals on THE original version of the Jackson Sisters ‘I Believe in Miracles’. Recorded in 1973 and performed by Mark Capanni who co-wrote the song, this was completed and ready to go a full 14 months before the Jackson Sisters version hit the streets. Despite the Capanni version having been pressed up it failed to make an impact – too soulful for rock radio but not soulful enough for RnB radio – and the record was pulled. It was the Jackson Sisters with their full-on dancefloor funk that did the business, released in 1974 it’s since gained legendary status, a musical definition of the rare groove era and with a multitude of versions and remixes. BUT it’s only recently that this amazing ORIGINAL version has been discovered…"
