TONIGHT in Brooklyn: The Couch Sessions Five Year Anniversary Party with Aloe Blacc, Peter Hadar, & Kimberley Nichole
My Brooklyn and NYC peoples: Stone of The Couch Sessions is part of the Connoisseurs of Culture collective and has been on the grind BREAKING (not 'aggregating' or biting) new music on his site for 5 years strong now. This event looks mega and I'm pissed I left NY yesterday and am missing it but for those of you who live in the city full-time, don't f-ck this off. Aloe Blacc is very dope live and Peter Hadar is a promising new talent - Stone has a put a ton of work into making this sh-t official so act accordingly and go check it out!

Happy Canada Day!

So I'm a bit conflicted today. Its a holiday here in Canada but this was also supposed to be the launch date for a project that I have been working on with my fellow Connoisseurs of Culture, Benhameen of Pleasedontstare.com and Stone of The Couch Sessions called Independent's Day. The concept was a mixtape of collabs between independent artists (mostly) from the T.dot (Toronto) with independent artists from the DMV (DC-Maryland-VA) all produced by new and up-and-coming Toronto and DMV-based beat-makers. The goal was to launch it in conjunction with July 1, Canada Day (aka Canada's Birthday or Canadian independence day) and the US Independence day, July 4.
We've been working on it for a few months but even our best planning and efforts underestimated how long and how much of an undertaking this was really gonna be that, now that the deadline is finally upon us, we found ourselves nowhere close to being ready to release it yet.
Plans for the mixtape are still going ahead though. We are gonna push it back to later this year so that we can not only finish it but do it right meaning: getting all the artists we wanted and getting them the best beats to spit over that we can. We want to do the concept proper justice because we are putting in far too much work to settle for anything but the best possible project we can create. Besides, there's too many bullsh-t blog-sponsored mixtapes flooding the
In the meantime though, I'm gonna post videos and music from some of the Canadian artists we are gonna be featuring on Independent's Day today and will do the same for the DMV artists on July 4. Enjoy and stay tuned for updates on Independent's Day in the upcoming months as the project starts to come together in a more concrete way. But before I get into that, let me post this....

"'Night Flight' is a concept song based upon physically looking down at the world and basically documenting what I see from an imaginary perspective, a 'high class society' perspective, and a middle ground of reality perspective. The song is produced by No Alias from Los Angeles, who also did "Feeling Good" and a few other joints on the album. Broken Dreams for free download on June 7th."
Kind of fits in with the theme of one of the books I'm reading right now, Jonathan Lethem's Fortress of Solitude.

Yes! The Connoisseurs of Culture are back with another fine joint venture. This time we present J. Nolan, a young gunner out the ATL.
Some of you regular readers are probably familiar with the name from seeing it on the various posts I've done on him here at The Kitchen over the past couple years. If you haven't checked out his music to date yet, now is the time to start. Dig classic, mid-90's inspired hip hop - heartfelt quality rhymes over smoothed-out jazz/soul-breaks and loops (yeah, kind of like what Kanye used to do)? Then this is you all day.

The Connoisseurs of Culture present T.Shirt & Darvin Silva - Tan-Face Children EP
Of course I posted this before but it's #MusicMonday on twitter and part of The Connoisseurs of Culture's mission is to really promote projects we present. We don't just ride with projects one time so that, after all the hard work an artists puts in on a full-length project, it disappears off the front page of our respective blogs only to be forgotten in the bottomless pits of bullsh-it that is music on the internet.
Shirt astutely took my advice and uploaded his excellent Tan-Face Children EP (and now all his previous mixtapes) onto Bandcamp, something I recommend ALL artists too, which makes it more pertinent for me to repost it and even easier for you to now check it out too.
The first time I had posted it, I hadn't even checked it out properly but since then I have and its f-cking excellent! If you dig Cudi, Mickey Factz, Wale or even BP3-era Jay-Z (listen to the second-to-last track, "Allure" to see why I say that), you might dig this. I've seen some comments online comparing EP producer, Darvin Silva's beats to acclaimed underground producer, Flying Lotus but I'm not that up on his stuff so I won't make the same claim but if that's your bag, there you go!
Anyway, let me know what you think. Stone, Benhameen and I will be bringing you more 'Connoisseurs of Culture presents' projects over the coming year. Artists of all stripes (i.e. musicians, producers, directors, painters, graphic designers etc.), if you're doing some fresh, new sh-t that you fell people are sleeping on, holla at us if you wanna talk about making your next project a Connoisseurs of Culture project.

"There's nothing better than making something with your friends. Sometimes, I just gotta forget about the outside world listening in and remember who I really made this for first and foremost. When I've rapped for myself in the past I never got the kind of response I wanted.. it's only when I rap for us.. when I take how I feel, what Darvin goes through, Dred, how Ronin's felt, my brothers.. New music: The Connoisseurs of Culture present T.Shirt & Darvin Silva - 24 Frames
Friday night is movie opening night so there's not more fitting a time to launch the second leak from T.Shirt & Darvin Silva's Tan-Face Children EP dropping next Tuesday (March 9) in conjunction with the Connoisseurs of Culture. I told you before the COC is only trying to f-ck with cats who are trying to do somehting new, fresh or different creatively, be it in music, video, art or otherwise. Check Shirt on how "24 Frames" came about:
"I'm not sure how I came up with the idea but my whole thing was man, 'Has this ever been done?' I asked friends and people on Twitter their favorite films, took some of my own and just went to work. At first it seemed like it was gonna be this huge task but once I got into it, it was just fun (haha). I'm most proud of how the story is still my own and still tells some of my real experiences. Even down to my man Dred from Brazil who runs Hot Mot Films. I used his film debut I_NY at the end of the third verse. We're going all the way with this one. Expect a gang of cool promotion."

I've supported this dude before (see HERE and HERE) and now I'm proud to premiere The Mix Mason's latest mix project in conjunction with Benhameen and Stone under the Connoisseurs of Culture banner.
Its not even technically an 'official' mix, just something he put together as a calling card to send around to booking agents but its FIYA still and needs to be shared properly! With his trademark blend of hip hop, electro, house, bmore and other current club sounds, Mason is spinning all the sounds that are hot in the clubs nowadays but its his selection and mixing skills, which are ridiculous, that set him apart. Mark my words, you're gonna be hearing a lot about and from this kid in the future.

"The Connoisseurs of Culture is a media collective comprised of the critcially-acclaimed and popular music & lifestyle websites, The Couch Sessions, Different Kitchen and Please Don't Stare.
The goal of the COC is to brand & present the work of musicians, producers, DJ's, video & film directors, visual artists and other creative types whose art we believe in and want to support on a deeper level than just basic posts on our respective sites.
A 'Connoisseurs of Culture Presents' project will be rolled out as a fully 'Branded' project with a comprehensive, integrated launch campaign leveraging all key social media platforms and the combined might of the collective social networks and readership of the COC network."

"Over the last two months Retro Electro DJ/Producer Darvin Silva, and New York City rapper T.Shirt have been working on their full and realized debut EP together, Tan-Face Children. The name derives from the opening line of the famous Walt Whitman poem “Pioneers! O Pioneers!” where the poet beckons the burning youth “Come my tan-face children”. He’s speaking of the Western world, the youth of a generation working in the sun for long hours thus becoming, “tan-faced”. It’s a poetic and just way to describe the hard-working famous kids from Queens.
The chemistry in the music is electrifying. Darvin’s penchant for finding the “dirty, rap shit” in say, a mid-tempo french house song is as strong as can be.
