Documentary: Maestro - Larry Levan & early DJ culture
I know everyone's still talking about DJ AM, quite rightly, but check out this great documentary about the early roots in the development of NYC's club music culture and another leegendary DJ, Larry Levan. This is a MUST-view if you care about DJ-ing and the history of black, club music. I know Jay Smooth just did a show on this sound over the weekend. Not sure if its archived anywhere though?? How well was Only Bulit 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II marketed??
Blogger and website support has been high; music has been been leaked and well-received from singles to mixtapes. All kinds of videos, interviews, BTS & trailers for multiple songs, have circulated around. Unfortunately, I still think you need a traditional hit in the real world of radio and television to put up any kind of real sales numbers and as far as I'm aware, Rae does not have that? Given that reality, my prediction is that he'll do better than Slaughterhouse but somewhere far short of Fabolous. Approaching Jada numbers (which were a freakish anomaly IMHO) is not even a discussion unless something really weird happens between now and September:

Manifesto presents the Michael Jackson Tribute - 3hr set mixtape
In case you overlooked it in yesterday's post. Here's the skinny:
"On July 1st, 2009 Manifesto brought over 30,000 Torontonians to Yonge & Dundas Square to celebrate the life, music & magic of the one and only Michael Jackson. Six heavy-weight Toronto deejays - Starting from Scratch, Son of S.O.U.L., DJ L’oqenz, Mensa, Sean Sax and Jason Palma - played their hearts out to one of the biggest crowds of their lives, laying down the larger than life legacy of the King of Pop. KevinNottingham.com Presents… Beat It: A Musical Tribute to Michael Jackson (Mixed by DJ Grain)
Here's the plug:
"To help ease the pain suffered from members here on KevinNottingham.com, we held a beat contest. Producers came from everywhere to sample their favorite MJ song and to help pay tribute.
Today we celebrate the birth of Michael Jackson; he would have been 51. Out of the hundreds of beats that were submitted, we narrowed it down to the best 25. Then I let me man DJ Grain go to town, mix them and put his spin on it. Grab the mix after the cut. As a bonus, I’ve included a download of all the winning beats, unmixed."

New music: Tracks from the Q-tip Kamaal The Abstract album
From the long-lost (but actually much-bootlegged) Q-tip album, Kamaal the Abstract album. I think Tip was kind of ahead of his time with this album. Maybe people will be more open to it now after the success of last year's well-received The Renaissance album? Check these tracks out:
Q-tip - "Damn You’re Cool (clean)" | "Heels (Clean)" | "Reverber For Factory (Clean)" [yousendit mp3 download link]

New music: Jay-Z - "Venus vs. Mars"
Of course more leaks from Blueprint 3. I'm seeing mixed response on this one online but listen carefully: Hov's spitting some slick sh-t. This is basically an "I Used to Love H.E.R." type track (I think?):

Introducing Dirty Ghosts - "Steamboat to Concord"
I'm f-cking with this hardbody too. I don't know much about this duo (and neither apparently, did the guy from the promo company who sent it to me - er, WTF??!?!!). All I know is if you like dirty lo-fi, fuzzed-out psychedelic/bluesy guitars over hip hop-inspired breakbeat-style drums, you need to get at this IMMEDIATELY. And it's not a one-off either - other tracks on their MySpace seem to follow a similar pattern. I'd someone like say Mark Ronson should produce these guys but he might make their sound too polished and pop!
Update: apparently they're working with Aesop Rock which explains the hip hop beats now.

New music: Jay-Z feat. Drake - "Off That"
Get ready for the blog posting tsunami that will be the inevitable 'leaks' leading up to the release of the much-anticipated Blueprint 3 album. Expect this to happen at least 5-6 more times by my best estimation.
For the record, I think this track is actually pretty decent. Much closer to the spirit of peak-era period Hov when he had the clubs on smash with joints by Timbaland (behind the decks for this track) and Pharrell than much of his recent output.

I'm sure there's no shortage of places for you to cop it from so what's the rush? I'm gonna get to it but also wanted to put this up too. It's the first leak from the DJ Noodles' new mash-up/blends mixtape project, Jay-Z: Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn Part III clearly put together to capitalize on the hype for BP3.

Healthcare Round-Up Part II
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Joe Scarborough's best defense was trying to equate an expansion of Medicare into a single payer system that would cover everyone (essentially no private insurance and a single 'Public Option' for all) with visions of a scary "government takeover" of healthcare. Think this argument is new?? Check out this piece on 'Medicare's Inception' by Laurence O'Donnell on MSNBC's 'The Ed Show" about how this rhetoric was used when Medicare was first introduced back in the early 1960's and check out who the anti-Medicare forces used as their mouthpiece back then!:

New music from Ron Browz and DJ Webstar
I know blog types like dissing these two cats 'cos they think they're easy targets but they are both my peoples and have been since way before they finally blew up so I'ma stay riding:
DJ Webstar feat. Serani - "Tipsy in da Club" (prod. by Ricky Blaze) [yousendit mp3 download link]
Pryme feat. Ron Browz - "I Love My Money (remix)" [mp3 links: main | radio edit]
Is it me or does this cat Pryme sound a little like Red Cafe?

For the record, as I said here, I think their first week sales were actually pretty good for them. I mean, c'mon: non of these dudes are proven commerical entities except for Joe Budden who had a semi-hit album five years ago but whose profile since then has completely diminished except for within super-underground hip hop circles. Anyone who thought they were gonna do much better than they did was kind of deluded. Sorry, Dallas!

In case you were under a rock and missed this and the Jay-Z video this past week:
Drake Feat. Nipsey Hussle - "Killers" [yousendit mp3 download link via OVO]
Drake I can f-ck with, the appeal of this Nispey dude I really don't get even though he sounds adequate enough on this joint....
Bonus:
Baby feat. Lil Wayne & Drake - "Money to Blow" [mp3 links: zshare | yousendit via Rap Star Promo]
I heard there might be recyled verses on this one? I can't even really be mad at that - I mean: how many songs has this dude Weezy made in the past 3-4 years. It was bound to happen at least once or twice. Song is still cool to me either way.
