New music: Shaun Boothe - "Concepts" feat. Talib Kweli
From the forthcoming Hip in 3D project by Shaun:
Download Shaun Boothe - "Concepts" feat. Talib Kweli [yousendit mp3 link]
I usually have a low tolerance for songs about the art of rapping but this one actually ain't too bad and I always dig when rappers actually trade off lines rather than writing individual verses. Shows they actually really collaborated instead of just IM-ing each other random verses to throw into their laptop Pro Tools rig. Real EPMD throwback ish: more please!

New music: Jasiri X - Exhibit X
The Bloggers Made Me Do it:
"First of all I love “Exhibit C“! Just Blaze’s incredible gritty yet soulful production and Jay Electronica’s raw no nonsense lyricism make this the song of the year in my opinion. The song’s success as well as Raekwon’s Only Built for Cuban Linx Part 2 truly renewed my faith as an artist, because they both proved if you make great Hip-Hop music, people will support it. I especially felt “Exhibit C” because Jay Electronica is spittin bar after bar of consciousness, something that is sorely missing in today’s rap landscape. To echo Just Blaze, “we need something realer”."

Katt Williams 3-CD Box Set In Stores Now!
I got sent this a while ago by the good folks at Special Ops but I never got around to posting anything about it but since I've been on a comedy run the last couple days, I figured I'd throw this up finally.
If you're into hip hop and comedy and don't know about this dude I'm shaking my head but if that's a fair description of you, here's the 30-second version: dude has been killin' 'em with the 21st century pimp humor and was down with Dip Set for a hot second when that still meant anything. This 3-CD box set entitled Katt Box is a collection of shows from three of his best tours: American Hustle, It’s Pimpin’ Pimpin’, and The Pimp Chronicles. I woulda preferred a DVD set but at least it had my favorite bit he does about the Chrysler 300 vs. the (Rolls Royce) Phantom.
Check out some more (audio) clips here:
“Insurgents” (from The Pimp Chronicles Part 1) | “Biggest Gangstas” (from American Hustle) | “Finally Got My Motorcycle” (from It’s Pimpin Pimpin) [m4a audio clips]

Video of the Women In Hip Hop Tour Documentary: THE REVIVAL
"The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It also shows the exchange of lessons between them and up-and-coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps, and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed and directed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women in independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters."

The Real Frequency Top 25 Hip-Hop Albums of the Decade
Featuring Kardinal Offishall who joined the TRF crew to co-host and discuss their countdown of the Top 25 Hip-Hop Albums of the past Decade!
Before you blast off on their list they want you to consider that the following criteria was used to build the list:
1. ARTISTRY: Did the album move you in a completely different way with the beats and rhymes?
2. IMPACT: Would the 2000's have been the same without this album?
I think their list is pretty good actually! Mine would be different - in fact, the one I submitted to the Passion of the Weiss is way different although not sure I'd submit the same list today. Speaking of which, I guess I better get on my year-end and (groan) decade-end lists (really??) before the end of the year arrives and too much time lags.

If you don't know who Kraftwerk are I feel sorry for you but luckily this New York Times feature can save you from yourself.
For those of you who think Notorious BIG is old school, to give you a sense of their musical & cultural importance, what Daft Punk are to Kanye West, Justice and modern electronic pop & hip hop music, Kraftwerk were in their day. They are the direct or indirect inspiration for electro, Detroit techno, Miami Bass, new wave synth pop and Chicago house music.

Homeland Security is Bullsh-t!
Seriously! I mean they've been racially profiling Arab and SE Asian-looking people since 9/11 and making all of us go through these useless bullsh-t proecdures like taking off our shoes and not being able to carry on beverages or all of our luggage if we have regular-sized toiletries since they caught that moron Richard Reid shoebomber dude. I won't even get back into all the crazy wiretap & domestic spying on US citizens that not only violated Americans' privacy but was also illegal until Bush bullied the Congress into not only making it legal but expanding it! (OK, I guess I just did....)
Meanwhile, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab's own father called the US government to warn them of his son's increasingly radicalized beliefs and possible threat potential. And yet, despite opening a file and investigation on him, the dude was still able to get on a plane (albeit not in the US) with some explosives that he attempted to set off. He wasn't even put on the so-called Terrorist 'No-Fly' List to be flagged if and when he attempted to travel! You know: the same one the late, great Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy and other obvious non-terror threats had been put on.
So now everyone's on edge and reporting every stupid incident no matter how trivial and we all have to now put up with even more ridiculous 'security' procedures.
The War on Terror has always been total nonsense in my book, ever since Bush coined the term in the lead-up justification for his botched foreign policy actions in Afghanistan and Iran. The ongoing wars there have become a complete waste of time and even if success (whatever that means at this point) is achieved, it will all mean nothing if the government cannot even competently manage the kind of basic intelligence & policing action that really keeps people safe beyond conducting counter-terror military actions. Not sure this kid really had the means to damage the plane he was on but thank goodness for passengers like Jasper Schuringa. At least they were there to do the job when the government couldn't even with the easy lay-up like this.
I hate to crack on my dude, President Obama 'cos ultimately I think he's been forced to play some really bad hands he's been dealt from Bush's 8 years of incompetence. But for this to have happened eight years after 9/11 is a total mindf-ck and homeland security fail IMHO. I know this flight originated out of Amsterdam but WTF? We don't share the names of possible terror suspects with other countries still? In 2009? Really?? Please, someone explain this to me if I'm missing something here that justifices this f-ckery.
Me? For now, I'll stay taking the Megabus when I can and skip the bullsh-t. Next up in my rants, a look at the online hysteria behind the rapper, Jay Electronica....

Video: Kobe & Lebron - Dunkin On A Reindeer feat. KRS-One & Lupe Fiasco
I got a grip more stuff I wanna post but I think I'ma wrap it up for now with this season-appropriate nugget that I ignored when I saw it on other sites a few days back, but which I happened to catch when I was watching BET's 106 & Park for the first time in aeons the other day. I had to laugh - KRS-One: you're a fool for this one. And to think, hip hop almost ground to halt the first time you did something like this, partially out of shock that you had done a comerical and partially because of who you did it with! Shout to Lupe too....
Anyway, for those that celebrate, enjoy the Christmas break and thanks for riding with me for yet another year. "Everyone's got a favourite Primo beat. Whether it's the backdrop of Nas' portrayal of New York underworld in N.Y. State of Mind, Gang Starr's tale of greed and ambition Just To Get A Rep, or the panicky dream sequence of I Can't Wake Up from KRS-One, some of THE finest MCs to have ever graced a mic, have spit deep lyrics over a chopped up break from Primo's crates. Now time has proved that DJ Premier defined an era. Back then, both beatmakers and MCs first had to battle to the top of the pile, and then had to have something to say. Primo's tracks in themselves are masterpieces in honesty, direct statements carrying the messages of MCs like Biggie, Rakim, Mos Def and Bahamadia [ed note: did the RBMA just cite Bahamadia ahead of say, Snoop Dogg or Jay-Z??] straight to the heart while still rocking the dance."

Music video: Juelz Santana feat. Yelawolf – Mixin’ Up The Medicine
I was kinda more excited about this dude, Yelawolf when he was doing stuff like "Kickin'" but this joint with Young Splash ain't bad actually. Peep the official plug for the video too if you're not enticed to watch already...
"Three/21 and Skullz Gang present the “Mixin’ Up The Medicine” music video for Juelz Santana feat. Yelawolf. Like the Bob Dylan sample, our concept pays homage to the original Dylan video as well as detailing the perspective of Juelz as a mad scientist character who must live in isolation in order to create the “medicine”. Lots of potion and tons of guns. Enjoy!"

The Black Apple Profile: Brandon Hines (Video)
New artist from my peoples at GFC New York, the people who brought you Mickey Factz. Meet Brandon Hines:
"Cultivated in Motown, and refining his chops at Howard University, Brandon Hines and his refreshingly natural singing talent are campaigning for legendary status. His smooth, baritone vocals command the attention of the ladies and his relatable lyrics are magnetic for the gentlemen. His independently released album, Love Music: Fallin in Fallin Out has sold over 7,000 copies."

I guess Leyva won't be having Pyrex Visions any more! Sorry, bad joke but he wasn't exactly a nice guy.

Video: Pill interview with The Source
I love Pill [pause] and think he's really talented, but here's an industry-insider friend of mine on the current frenzy around this dude at record labels:
"The Pill shit is a microcosm of what's wrong with A&R in Black Music. They created a little buzz on the 'net and now all the labels are throwing wild money at this kid who is dope, no question, but has NO NO NO street presence and has made TWO mixtapes. No one does homework. No-one has even actually GONE to ATL to check his bona fides down there: he does NO shows and isn't even really known in his hometown. The shit is so retarded to me. Hey God bless him if he can get the bread but it's so ridiculous. He's dope but the next Jeezy or Gucci? I doubt it. Dude NO ONE know who he is down there. When I say he has no street presence I mean NONE. It's shocking."
Thoughts, anyone?

New music: Spek Won - The Preemo Donna Mix Album
Now THIS is more like it. This kid blew my skull wide open a few months back with his bare bones, 120% B-Boy official, "Hip Life" single and video. Now he's finally coming though with a full mix album. I haven't peeped this yet but this is one of the few things I'm genuinely excited to download and check out.

Toronto artists, holla at the kid! I'm actually from the T.dot and wanna support good home town (and home country) artists. Plus there's more to promoting your music in your home market that just sending it to TRF, CityonmyBack.com and Hip Hop Canada, no disrespect to any of them of course! And let's talk about how to do it BIG! There's big things afoot at The Kitchen for 2010. Get at me, mayne!!!!

New music: Xzibit - Hurt Locker
Xzibit's a strange one. Personally, I'm a fan but I know there are a GRIP of people who have NO idea he's a rapper (an ex-girlfriend of mine who was mad young comes to mind) but try to mention his one big record and you realize why - he's never had one! On the other hand, most people know Pimp My Ride and some might remember his appearances in movies like Gridiron Gang and XXX: State of the Union. All that being said, this new track, the first single off his upcoming album set to drop next year, ain't bad but it's not likely to change the narrative of his career...
