Video: Texas Republican Rep Joe Barton Apologizes to the BP CEO for the '$20 Billion Shakedown'

If you ever had any doubts as to whose side the GOP was on: the corporations or the people's, watch this video and erase them now.

He might have said he was only 'speaking for himself' but be clear: Barton's shameful betrayal of the people of the Gulf Coast is just one example of how the Right repeatedly acts as stooges for corporations and puts their interests ahead of the people's. Rand Paul calling President Obama's criticism of BP 'Un-American' is just one other.

It would be naive to think that corporate interests only have their hand in the pockets of the Republicans but at least the Democrats make some pretense of having the people's interest at heart sometimes as well. This spectacle of corporate stooley-ism is just disgusting....

More from those wacky 'Family Values' Republicans

The video above offers more details on the story of Paul Stanley, a Tennessee State Senator, who was having an affair with his 22-year old intern! Here's the backgrounder:

"A Tennessee lawmaker resigned from the state Senate on Tuesday after his extramarital affair with a 22-year-old intern was revealed by an investigation into an extortion case.

"Due to recent events, I have decided to focus my full attention on my family and resign my Senate seat effective August 10," Republican Sen. Paul Stanley wrote in his resignation letter.

Stanley's legislative proposals were largely focused on pro-business issues, but he also sponsored failed measures to ban gay couples from adopting children. He also spoke out against funding for Planned Parenthood because he said unmarried people should not have sex.

"Whatever I stood for and advocated, I still believe to be true," he said during an interview Tuesday with Memphis radio station WREC-AM. "And just because I fell far short of what God's standard was for me and my wife, doesn't mean that that standard is reduced in the least bit."" [click here for the full article at Huff Post]

AP video: GOP's Michael Steele Attacks Democrats on the Stimulus Plan

Related:

"Steele's 2006 Senate campaign spending questioned." But he wants to talk about wasted spending?? [Washington Post]

And BTW....

"Carol Carter, a Republican state committeewoman representing Hillsborough County, resigned Thursday after the St. Petersburg Times reported she forwarded an e-mail joke that was attacked as being racist.

The e-mail, with the subject line "Amazing!" read:

"I'm confused.

"How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn't get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?"

Carter followed up with an apology e-mail to the county's Republican Executive Committee board saying she had sent the e-mail only to eight people and was "sorry that it was received in a negative manner. I do hope that we are going to be allowed to keep our sense of humor."

Carter did not return calls for comment." [click here for full story via the St. Petersburg Times]

Oh so we're wrong for not having a sense of humor and she's not wrong 'cos she only shared a private joke. Maybe she'll learn her lesson from Carol Thatcher's example about what's considered polite conversation, whether in private or public. I'm far from PC but if you think trading in meanspirited, racist humor like this is appropriate in 2009, I don't even know what to say.... [The Telegraph - UK]
