Video: Downtown Calling Documentary
In a city that has had many great cultural eras, 1977-1985, the period that birthed hip hop might be one of the greatest! Peep game:
"In the late 1970s, New York City was teetering on the edge of total chaos. Yet out of the economic and social strife that held the “Big Apple” hostage, a family of homegrown cultures that would forever change the world began to emerge. Downtown Calling not only documents in detail the evolution of the fertile music and art subculture of this period, but how its collective output continues to play a prominent, driving role in the international fashion, art and music industries today. Downtown Calling features an impressive spread of rare photography and archival footage, past and present day interviews with a wide array of internationally renowned luminaries, and a continual, driving soundtrack of classic music of the era."

New Music: Dinco D feat. B The Hard Way – Dinc to The Dinc

For those not knowing, Dinco D was the oft-overlooked third member of early 90's hip hop crew, Leaders of the New School which introduced the world to a young Trevor Smith aka Busta Rhymes.
Cats may have slept on Dinco while slavering over Busta and underrated second-banana Charlie Brown but this record is kinda dope. It sounds like it was made in ’96 and I mean that in a good way! This might not be 2010 style hip hop but it damn sho' is funky. In other words, hip hop I can f-ck with!
On the crate-diggin' tip, is that the same sample as Gangstarr's "B.Y.S." in the beat?? And while we're talking about Gangstarr and posting so much old school hip hop stuff, let me say R.I.P. to Guru one more time. The Kitchen never forgets....

Throwback Music: Big L - No Endz, No Skinz / Give It To Em L

More over-priced but kind of essential reissue 90's hip hop this time from the legendary Big L. I'll let Verge from the T.R.O.Y. blog explain:
"So, apparently these tracks were on the original version of Big L's first album, produced entirely by Showbiz, that burned up in a fire at Jazzy Jay's studio. How these songs got found, nobody knows, but this IS some historic shit right here. I know the price is high, but if you're a Big L enthusiast, you should really grab this one. And you get more than just the Big L tracks if you cop because it's actually a "double 12" and the other piece of wax included is the previously unreleased 3 tracks, with instrumentals, by emcee Silky Black. Two of which are produced by Showbiz and one by the mighty Lord Finesse. I believe they pressed up about 400 copies but I could be mistaken. The reason for the pricing in nowadays price dropping, over saturated limited market, was probably from dealing with greats like Lord Finesse and Showbiz, not to mention Big L's estate. I'm merely speculating here, so don't try to eviscerate me in the comments."
Check the tracks below:

Throwback Music: O.C. – O-zone Originals EP

Rare and unreleased music from O.C. from '93 and before??! This is MAJOR!!!
"After debuting on Organized Konfusion’s “Fudge Pudge” single, O.C. started traveling with O.K. when they did shows. It was on The Source Magazine College tour in 1993 when O.C. first met Buckwild, who was deejaying for fellow tour act Lord Finesse at the time. A creative union was formed and when O.C. was signed to MC Serch’s Serchlite production company, they started working on a demo… No Sleep Recordings is proud to present tracks off of that demo; six previously unreleased songs and a rare promo that was done for legendary NYC radio personalities, Stretch and Bobbito. Buckwild himself produced three of these tracks and there is also production from Mark Pearson and DJ Eclipse (from Non-Phixion fame). It is also from these early sessions that the Hip-Hop classic “Word Life” originated…"
Track list:
Side A

Hip Hop is Read Presents Dr. Dre - The Chronic: The Samples

Speaking of Dr. Dre, even if he borrowed much of what made him successful from less-heralded artists like Above the Law's Cold 187um, dude is still one of the greatest to ever do it. His record speaks for itself and perhaps, nothing speaks louder than what might stand as his towering masterpiece in a catalog spanning many masterpieces, The Chronic, a record that still sounds as amazing today as it did when it was released almost 18 years ago! Ivan does it once more and collects up a set of the tracks that were sampled to create this seminal G-Funk album. Read more about The Chronic HERE.

Hip Hop is Read Presents Above the Law - Uncle Sam's Curse: The Samples

What y'all know about "Black Supermen"?! O.G. hip hop fans know the deal. Young'uns might need to do some homework. For those of you too lazy to do that though, let me put it to you this way: much of what people give Dr. Dre, arguably the greatest hip hop producer of all time, credit for including 'his' signature G-Funk sound came directly from lead Above the Law MC and main group producer, Hutch aka Cold 187um. Before you argue with me, go do your research then come back and we can have a discussion.

Prince Paul Makes his Unreleased Horror City Album from 1995 Available for FREE Download

This is kind of epic!!!
Via Prince Paul:
"This was a project that I wanted to put together with Amityville MC legend Superstar. as I thought about it more I wanted to recruit more Mcs we knew to make it diverse.
Superstar already had the name Horror City so we recorded under that name. This project was recorded right after the first Gravediggaz album 6ft Deep in 1995. I shopped the demo but unfortunately it got looked over and never got signed. I sat on this project for a while but it always had a dear place in my heart because I thought it was really good and the talent was there. I stripped some of the music from the demo and put it on A Prince Among Thieves and actually had a few of the guys perform on the Thieves album as well but to be honest, I always liked these originals better.
So now I have decided share these songs with all of you because holding on to them made no sense. Why not share great music? Hopefully you the listener will enjoy this project as much as I do. Please share it, that's why I made this for free download.
For more group info please log on to Facebook for a proper bio of Horror City."

Rare Documentary 80 Blocks From Tiffany's To Be Re-Released After 25 Years

I posted a youtube rip of this a couple years back so when I just saw this announcement a short while ago I went NUTS!!! DO NOT SLEEP on this this!!! Peep the science:
"Five Day Weekend and Traffic Entertainment are proud to announce the upcoming DVD release of 80 Blocks From Tiffany's, director Gary Weis' 1979 documentary about the South Bronx and its gang culture. The previously unavailable film will be released in the Fall of 2010, the first time it has been offered to the public in decades, and will be accompanied by a handful of exciting bonus features.
Director Gary Weis was still working as a short film creator for Saturday Night Live when he came up with the idea for 80 Blocks after reading a Jon Bradshaw article, "Savage Skulls." Published in a 1977 issue of Esquire Magazine, the piece centered on two gangs based in the South Bronx at the time -- the Savage Nomads and the Savage Skulls. Weis became infatuated with the story and, soon after striking up a dialogue with Bradshaw, he convinced SNL producer Lorne Michaels to help him produce the film. Just two years later, in 1979, Weis and Bradshaw brought a camera crew to speak with members of both gangs, along with police officers, community activists, and civilians.
Despite its role as an important and unflinching portrait of a profoundly interesting time in New York's cultural history, 80 Blocks was, for many years, impossible to find, only briefly available as an educational VHS release in 1985. In the years since its initial release, the documentary has gained an overwhelming cult status. With little to no news coverage over the decades since its release dedicated fans continued to buzz about the film. That buzz grew exponentially via the internet, which provided fans a common platform to fondly look back not only the at documentary itself, but the era that it captured so vividly.
The cries of many have been heard. For the first time in 25 years, the soon-to-be-released DVD will be accessible by the public, and will include interviews with producer/filmmaker Weis and director of photography Joan Churchill, as well as a 40 page book comprised of the original "Savage Skulls" article, an essay by David Hollander, and artwork by Julian Allen. All of this is, of course, to accompany both full and widescreen versions of the film that started it all."
