Haiti Once More....
I'm out of town right now so don't have a ton of time to blog but I'll post when I can but first up is another post on Haiti. I hope people aren't getting blase about that situation because the situation there is beyond f-cked up. Well over 100,000 dead and over a million estimated left homeless. And this is a country that was already f-cked up before the earthquake. Watch the video above then read up some more....

"Denver's DJ Low Key joins acclaimed artist M11X and popular hip hop site Illroots.com for De La Extras #2, his second tribute to rap legends De La Soul. With 2009 commemorating the 20th anniversary of De La Soul's landmark debut album, DJ Low Key put together an unconventional mix of De La rarities, remixes, bootlegs & b-sides to accompany MX11 aka Mikal Hameed's De La Soul audio sculpture (featured on the mixtape's cover) on the De La Soul - 3 Feet High & Rising Art Tour. R.I.P. Apache of the Flavor Unit
This news f-cked me up when it broke on Friday! Apache was literally one of the first projects I ever worked on when I fist got in the music game. Now I wasn't there when "Gangsta B-tch" was recorded with producer, Q-tip but when my boss gave me the whole album with this track on it before its release, it was pretty obvious what the single had to be, flagrant lyrical content, controversial title 'n all. You couldn't deny Tip's incredible beat and the sheer catchiness of the track. Out of the many projects by the 155 Morgan Street crew I was dealing with at the time, it was clear this record was gonna GO, by hook or by crook. Avowed hip hop feminists like Dream Hampton or Kierna Mayo couldn't front on this track despite its exhortation for woman to carry the name B-thc like a badge of honor and even urban radio, which at the time was a LOT more conservative and anti-rap than it is now, eventually succumbed to the crass charm of Apache's anti-hit!
Now I'm not gonna get all hagiographic on y'all and claim Apache was a saint now that he's passed on. Dude could be a handful at times no doubt, but he knew who he was as an artist at the time and stood firm on that, often to the detriment of his own career (I'll always remember the "Kill All the White People..." promo t-shirts he insisted we make) but when you got right down to it, he was a really good guy. Its no surprise to me that later in his life, long after our paths had separated, that he had apparently found God. That should make it all the moreeasier for him to rest in peace. My condolences go out to his family, friends, Naughty and the Flavor Unit crew.
More on Apache:
Rap Radar broke the news on the hip hop blogs....
“Without Apache there would have been no Queen Latifah, no Naughty By Nature, no Chill Rob G., no anything. Apache was the string that tied all of Flavor Unit together. Without Apache none of this would be.” — Shakim Compere of Flavor Unit [TSS]
Can we please have a moment of silence for Flavor Unit rapper Apache. [Beats and Rants]

New music and video from the Rapper, QuESt
I REALLY dug this dude's "Trouble" freestyle over Q-tip's "Renaissance Rap" beat so I'm posting his take on Jay Electronica's "Exhibit C" even though I passed on posting most of the previous other freestyles by much bigger artists than him and doing Ex C freestyles is already verging on being played out, at least according to some. And BTW: here's the plug for the video above:
"So let me give you quick insight on this project, back in December I went to check out the MULTIVERSAL show headlined by Shawn Chrystopher, Jovi Rockwell and QuESt. Before it was time for QuESt to get on stage I decided to introduce myself and let him know how I felt about his music, then pitched him the idea about doing a short documentary. He was down but we didn't start until like a month later.
With that said that brings us to this clip at his Barbershop which was our first stop on an extensive day of filming. In the footage QuESt discusses the blogs where he first built his exposure...."
Download QuESt - "Exhibit Q" [usershare mp3 links: stream | download]
Here's an explanation of the track:
"I've been working non stop for the past couple months on my upcoming project, The Reason: A Defense Mechanism. Taking my time making this project is very important. I want this to be my best work to date. As I want with every major project that I release. While I'm still working on it, I took some time out seperately to compose a mixtape with my homie Dj RTC from the good folks at Ruby Hornet. Its called How Thoughtful & will be presented by YesIamQuESt.com & Rubyhornet.com. Just a little something to hold everyone over until the album is released. How Thoughtful will be released to the world on Feburary 11th. In the meantime this is a leak from it. Why not right? The Reason has no set release date yet but my team and I are aiming for an early summer."

DJ Drama again? I normally pass on these kinds of mixtapes but this one's description caught my eye:
“You’re probably thinking, “Oh, another Jeezy/Gucci Mixtape…” But in this case the key word is MIX! Almost each and every track on this tape is blended with unique combinations of hard hitting tracks with “beats on top of beats” to keep subwoofers begging for mercy! It’s been almost 2 years since Dirty Yella dropped (what some consider a classic) the first edition of Dope Boy Blends..TrapHustlaz (Starring Gucci Mane & Yo Gotti). Now he’s back with Trap History! Yella claims, “When the big homie Drama deaded the beef with Jeezy and then turned around and got Gucci and Jeezy to end their fued, It was nothing but motivation to create something exstravagant! I swear, when the three of them were beefing you had a Jeezy vs Gucci tape dropping every week! I just think that it’s only right to bring that same amount of energy to something positive.”

DJ Drama II: Yo Gotti - Cocaine Muzik 4
My man and fellow Connoisseur of Culture, Benhameen posted this with a sideway comment about not being "really convinced about Yo Gotti [yet]." I had to respond: Yo Gotti been dope since at least Back 2 Da Basics (which is the first album I discovered by him). And I've been saying this for a minute. Cats who don't f-ck with this dude are SLEEPING on him….

Rick Ross – Mafia Music Pt. 2 feat. Chrisette Michele
Rick Ross is the fakingest, most cornball dude ever but he makes FANTASTIC music! "Mafia Music 2" is a great f-cking record. So what does that say about the state of hip hop in 2010? No wonder one of the most popular slang terms in hip hop recently has been, "We're gonna make a movie." This dude has MASTERED that!

Video: Joell Ortiz & Cory Gunz - the Recording of Line Em Up
I don't normally post these kind of in-the-studio clips but this one is pretty cool. Joell and Gunz are working with a Canadian producer named Frank Dukes (who.he??) who's got a lot of fiya based on the beats they pass on before locking in on a real heater that they write too. I've been kind of semi on Gunz despite all the blog hype he's gotten over the past few year (still no official single or album over all this time?? C'mon son!), but he definitely made me a believer with this clip, at least in terms of his mic skills - he's MURDERING that beat. Agree?

New music: emancipator - safe in the steep cliffs
Late night 'trip hop/downtempo' vibes via the homie, Dom Corleone:
"Safe In The Steep Cliffs represents the tightest, most unique, most organic beats I've made in the last three years. This album has a new palette of sounds and samples from around the world, including more original recordings (guitar/violin/mandolin/banjo) and new guest artists including Japanese jazz musician Uyama Hiroto. It's ominous and overgrown, dense and ethereal. And epic. Always epic."
Always epic, huh? Agree?

New mashup album: Wu Tang Vs The Beatles - Enter The Magical Mystery Chambers
Spotted this one via my dude, Trent at Beats and Rants:
"This is a FREE downloadable mixtape mash-up featuring various Wu-Tang Clan acapellas over samples of Beatles songs. The 27-song collection was created by indie rap producer-remixer Tom Caruana, founder of his own independent label Tea Sea Records. I think Tom has created one of the best mixtape mash-up in 2010, so far. Bravo!"
Unlike Trent, I'm usually pretty skeptical of these gimmick, mashup albums and someone already did one with The Beatles really well but this is so audacious ("let's mix the Beatles with the Wu...") that I figured I should at least acknowledge it, even if its horrible....
