As you can tell, today is mostly electronic and rock music day, which is part of my new goal to try and blog on a schedule, but hip hop always finds a way into the mix here no matter what!
Black Keys is an underground blues-rock band that most definitely gets down with hip hop based on their participation in the excellent BlakRoc album project helmed by Dame Dash. This blues-meets-glam rock banger is the B-side of their 12" vinyl joint sold as part of Record Store Day. Because of that I'm only gonna stream it here, but if you're just that cheap and don't wanna buy it, I think you can still get a download of it via Steady Bloggin' where I swiped it from.

BTW: I say the BlakRoc album was excellent, but honestly I never actually heard the whole thing! I tried to buy the CD a couple times (I'm old school like that, I guess - if I'm gonna spend paper on actually buying music, I still want to hold something physical, nahmean?) but could NEVER find it in stores. I looked under Black Keys, BlakRoc, BlackRoc, Various Artists Pop/Rock, Damon Dash etc. etc. but nothing! I gave up in the end which is probably one of the reasons why the music industry is going down in flames....

Introducing New Artist Tanika Charles - Think of You
I've heard a lot of good music recently but nothing has grabbed me quite like "Think of You" by unsigned Toronto retro soul singer, Tanika Charles.
Now there's plenty of throwback-sounding soul music going around since Mark Ronson re-popularized the sound with Amy Winehouse, from Duffy to Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings (Winehouse's touring & recording band), but this song, which admittedly isn't new, is the truth! It's the one song I've probably played at least 50 times since T.dot rapper, Masia One put me up on homegirl earlier last week.

Viola Desmond, 'Canada's Rosa Parks' Finally Receives a Posthumous Free Pardon
Rosa Parks should actually be called the 'US's Viola Desmond' since her story preceded Parks' by 9 years but we know that goes! Here's the story [via Wikipedia] for those not knowing:
"On November 8, 1946, Viola Desmond refused to sit in the balcony designated exclusively for blacks in the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow but, instead, she took her seat on the ground floor where only white people were allowed to sit. After being forcibly removed from the theatre and arrested, Desmond was eventually found guilty of not paying the one-cent difference in tax on the balcony ticket from the main floor theatre ticket. She was fined $20 ($251.30 in 2010 and court costs ($6). She paid the fine but decided to fight the charge in court.
During subsequent trials the government insisted on arguing that this was a case of tax evasion. Retail sales tax was calculated based on the price of the theatre ticket. Since the theatre would only agree to sell the Black woman a cheaper balcony ticket, but she had insisted upon sitting in the more expensive main floor seat, she was one cent short on tax. For her crime of so-called tax evasion, she was removed from the theatre, thrown in jail overnight, tried without counsel, convicted and fined. During the trial, no one admitted that Viola Desmond was Black, and that the theatre maintained a racist seating policy. The trial proceeded as if it related to race-neutral tax evasion. All efforts to have the conviction overturned at higher levels of court failed. Her lawyer returned her fee which she used to set up a fund that was eventually used to support activities of the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NSAACP)."

As the leading hip hop blog in the game, Eskay's in a privileged position to speak out on f-ckery when he sees it. Shyne's explanation makes no f-kcing sense and if I was big enough for him to bother calling me, I would have told him that respectfully but honestly. I called it like I saw it from my little platform but people ain't reading me like they do Nah Right. Anyway, there's a good debate around all this over at Ivan's but like I said, not to digress from the more serious topic that is the primary focus of this post.
