2 Way feat. DJ Webstar - "Get Your Wiggle On" (street video)
Following up from the Toe Wop, Chicken Noodle Soup and Aunt Jackie, here's a "viral street video" for a song about yet another teen party dance staple from Harlem that some people may know as "Take A Picture" (the song that is, not the dance). Peace to Artie, 2 Way, Webstar (who I think produced this) and all my other peoples uptown.

Pharoahe Monch: Live in NYC TONIGHT!
Even though his cheap-ass promo company wanted me to run a ticket giveaway on the site but wouldn't give me a pair for myself (I'd buy 'em but am dead broke), I'm still gonna show love for Pharoahe Monch's show tonight at the Highline. Looks like it'll be a good one with Monch performing with a live band and Black Milk, Polyrhythm Addicts and The Cool Kids opening up. He looks nuts in that tour poster though.... My new favorite group? Da Banggaz 314 are like the new Crime Mob now that those guys have gone all crossover, dancefloor on us with "Rock Yo Hips." Tell me "Run Up Get Dun Up" ain't "Knuck if you Buck" for 2007. Apparently this starts fights in the Lou if you drop it in the clubs out there! Is this the return of crunk music done midwest style?

Keith Murray feat. Junior & Tyrese - "Nobody Do It Better"
Like it's 1994 all over again:
Keith Murray feat. Junior & Tyrese - "Nobody Do It Better" (mp3 via Bumsquad | alt link: zshare stream/download via Google search)
I still remember when Uncle Ralph premiered the "Most Beautifullest Thing" video on his classic Video Music Box cable video show. As Murray was on top of the Lexus spittin', he interjected to declare, "Now this is real hip hop." I swear I had NEVER heard him do anything else close to that for any other video. It was the ultimate cosign to me and you know what? Even if this track is basically a 2007 retread of that great record, Murray's still got what made Ralph speak out like that now in an era that doesn't really appreciate it any more (with a few exceptions). Enjoy this track and, not to be an old man but, remember what it is that got you excited about this hip hop ish in the first place....

Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival: recaps from around the internets
Props to Wes n crew for making the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival bigger and bigger every year. The 3rd annual go around this past Saturday was previewed in the NY Times weekend guide eblast and featured a surprise appearance by Fat Joe. Blowing up! Highlights for me were (in order) Parrish Smith (aka PMD), The El Michels Affair and Ghostface (not doing "Daytona 500" though - travesty!) but pretty much everyone else I saw including Consequence and Dres of Black Sheep aquitted themselves respectably too (slightly peeved at Sean Price for ending his set with the beat from "Mess You Made" but not actually performing it BTW also, but no biggie....). Iraq: surging to failure while killing US troops?
From an AP report spotted via The Guardian:
"The U.S. commander of a new offensive north of Baghdad, reclaiming insurgent territory day by day, said Sunday his Iraqi partners may be too weak to hold onto the gains. The Iraqi military does not even have enough ammunition, said Brig. Gen. Mick Bednarek: "They're not quite up to the job yet."
His counterpart south of Baghdad seemed to agree, saying U.S. troops are too few to garrison the districts newly rid of insurgents. "It can't be coalition (U.S.) forces. We have what we have. There's got to be more Iraqi security forces," said Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch."
Click here for more from "General: Iraq Forces 'Not Up to the Job'."
So I guess this probably be won't be going down after all then:
"The U.S. may be able to reduce combat forces in Iraq by next spring if Iraq's own security forces continue to grow and improve, a senior American commander said Friday. He denied reports the U.S. is arming Sunni insurgent groups to help in the fight against al-Qaida."Click here for more from "US may reduce forces in Iraq by spring."
More: "America's commander in Iraq says he doesn't think President Bush's troop surge will be successful enough to begin force reductions by September when the general delivers a key report to Congress." (from "Iraq pessimism: Quick surge success unlikely - General" here)

George W. Bush & the White House....
Super-flagrant as usual....
"E-mail records are missing for 51 of the 88 White House officials who had electronic message accounts with the Republican National Committee, the House Oversight Committee said Monday.
The Bush administration may have committed "extensive" violations of a law requiring that certain records be preserved, said the committee's Democratic chairman, adding that the panel will deepen its probe into the use of political e-mail accounts.
The committee's interim report said the number of White House officials who had RNC e-mail accounts, and the number of messages they sent and received, were more extensive than previously realized.
The administration has said that about 50 White House officials had RNC e-mail accounts during Bush's presidency. But the House committee found at least 88."

Beatz, Rhymes & Samples: Ski Beatz (mixtape)
So while we're on a Camp Lo kick, here's a link mixtape to the Ski Beatz Beatz, Rhymes & Samples mixtape that I think did the rounds a few months ago. I never really checked it out though until my dude DJ Raize gave me an actual physical copy yesterday. This is a nice collection of tracks from the classic Uptown Saturday Night album mixed by Raize with the original songs they sampled plus a few exclusive Ski Beatz productions including the unreleased Camp Lo track "Ticket for Two." I for one never knew that "Cooley High" sampled Janet Jackson's "Funny How Time Flies" - now that's producing cos Ski did an incredible job chopping that sample up. Anyway check it out for yourself if you haven't already copped:

Judd Apatow: Hollywood filmaker the Religious Right can love?
Just back after a ridiculous 11 hour trip from Florida (don't ask!). I'll get into that and more regular Kitchen-style posts later this week but in the meantime, let me just throw this out: I haven't been reading the Times regularly recently but I guess its influence on how I look at the world is still apparent.
So after I started seeing the trailer for Judd Apatow's latest film, Knocked Up a couple weeks ago I started thinking, "Behind the [admitted really well-executed] low-brow humor, is this dude actually a closet social conservative?!" Think about it: his first hit movie 40 Year Old Virgin is ultimately about a guy who is still a virgin way into his adult life and decides to remain so until he marries the woman he has fallen in love with despite his friends pressuring him to have sex. Now comes his follow-up film Knocked Up which tells the story of a couple trying to make a go of a relationship to raise the child they are expecting after a one-night stand. I thought I was the only one with these genius social-cultural insights until I picked up the Sunday Times yesterday:

On Abortion, Hollywood Is No-Choice
So I guess I wasn't that original in my thinking after all, huh?

The Iraq War: a quick update
More coming but this will hold you down 'til I get back from FL...
"U.S. Death Toll In Iraq Tops 3,500: 23 Deaths In First Six Days Of June, Almost Double That Of June 2006." (more here at CBS News)
"Dozens of gunmen swooped into a police chief's home Friday, killing his wife and two brothers and kidnapping three of his grown children. The senior officer wasn't there, but the bold attack provided a grisly example of the dangers facing Iraqi forces as they try to take over the country's security so American forces can leave." (more from the AP story "Bold Attack on Iraqi Police Chief's Home" via The Guardian here)
"An apparent rocket attack Saturday at a U.S.-run detention facility in southern Iraq killed at least six detainees and wounded 50, the military said. No American casualties were reported." (more from the AP Story "U.S.: 6 Inmates Die in Iraq Jail Attack" via The Guardian here)
"Fourteen U.S. soldiers were killed by bombs and small-arms fire in Iraq over the weekend [of June 2-3], the U.S. military said Sunday, as factional violence continued to ravage soldiers and civilians alike.." (more the CNN story " U.S. military: 14 U.S. soldiers killed over weekend" here)

A week after Memorial Day....
Sh*t is looking more and more horrible in Iraq. Yup, it was a terrible Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. And it ain't really gotten much better since then:
"A car bomb attack outside a major U.S. military base in Iraq discharged a gaseous cloud that sickened dozens of people Sunday, punctuating a flurry of violence that left 16 American soldiers dead during the first three days of June."
US & Iraqi troops control only a third of Baghdad - as I've said time and time again, so much for that troop surge!
And plans for New US embassy in Baghdad turn up online. They can't even control that??!
Meanwhile in Afghanistan: the Taliban launches a new operation.
And Al Qaeda is "stronger than ever."
No surprise since terror attacks are up around the world (as they were in 2004 and 2005) - so much for the effectiveness of the War on terror in general.
Although in the interests of being fair and balanced, I guess this is good news (unless the hype is on). But why did the JFK plotters have to be (mostly) Guyanese?!
And also back home: "The National Guard isn't as strong as it should be because of the war in Iraq and American communities will suffer as a result, retired Air Force Gen. Melvyn Montano said Saturday [May 12]."
And the army now has to bribe officers to remain in ranks: "The army is offering bonuses to officers as the military is preparing for years of combat to come."
That's enough doom n gloom for now. I got more but I'll save it for another post later this week.

Recent Music Wrap Up!
Watch your back Amy, the real soul queens are coming!
Hardcore mp3 blog readers probably have all this stuff already but for the rest of y'all here's some recent music to end your weekend or start your week depending on your perspective so go in!
Lily Allen feat. Kanye West "Oh My God (Urban Legendz Remix)" (zshare stream/download link) - DJ Capone and the Urban Legendz strike again with their bootleg remix steez this time splicing Ye's verse from Brandy's "Talk About Our Love" into this Lily Allen track. Sounds like an original Ronson production though, no?
Kanye West "Stronger (radio rip)" - speaking of Ronson, here's him running his yap over an otherwise decent quality radio rip of the Daft Punk-sampling "Stronger" single from Kanyeezy. I'm betting a full CDQ mp3 will pop up by tomorrow though. And BTW: if you missed copping that Kanye Can't Tell Me Nothin' mixtape via the links Eskay and Rizoh had that went dead, try this one instead.
Jill Scott "Hate On Me" (zshare stream/download link) - welcome back, Ms. Scott!
Lauryn Hill "Lose Myself" (zshare stream/download link) - from the Surf's Up soundtrack. Lauryn, please just make an album already!
Tiffany Paige's Breakin Boundaries mix CD - I don't know nathan about this new hip hop-soul singing chick but her mixtape features production by 9th Wonder, Nicolay, Madlib, Platinum Pied Pipers, Ayatollah and MF Doom so it's got to be worth peeping one time, right?
