Holy sh-t: how did I miss this one?? I saw it posted on several blogs a few days ago but didn't bother checking it out. BAD CALL! This video is amazing, don't skip by this one: watch it! Neophytes might cry that Snoop owes T-Pain royalties but real West Coast and funk afficianados know Snoop's love of the talkbox (that's the old school version of Autotune aka the Vocoder) has deeper roots. Video of the year contender, no doubt!

Birdman - "100 Million" (video)
This has been on every hip hop blog worth reading already but I know a few of you only come here for your hip hop updates and this video is pretty noteworthy so here it is anyway. DJ Khaled does yet more of his annoying intros and ad-libs but Birdman establishes once and for all that he is truly the Southern Diddy and by that I mean, a celebrity 'rapper' with a marginal talent but an outsize personality and ability to pull favors from real artists with way more talent than his own to help him make music and over-the-top cinematic videos. And like Diddy despite all that, it's hugely enjoyable nonetheless....

War on Terror Ally Update: Saudi Arabia
From an ABC News article by Lara Setrakian:
"Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Justice is defending a sentence of 200 lashes for the victim of a gang rape, punished because she was in the car of a male who wasn't a relative when the two were attacked.
[T]he General Court of Qatif increased the punishment to 200 lashes and six months in jail after she took her case to the press. Authorities deemed it an "attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media," according to Saudi Arabia's English-language newspaper Arab News."

Kanye breaks down in Paris
I feel for this kid right now. I lost a friend a few months ago and had (actually am still having) a tough time of it so I can only imagine what he's going through after having lost his mother so unecessarily. Free Justice x Mos Def x Spank Rock remix from the RCRD LBL
Is RCRD LBL the future of the music industry? Plenty of debate amongst my Grindin' crew on that question. But at the very least, this is gonna be an interesting experiment trying to reinvent the record label model for a rapidly-changing marketplace. About RCRD LBL:
"Well, we'd like to welcome you to RCRD LBL, a brand new music site where all of the downloads are both free AND legal. In a world where many people get their music for free, we wanted to create a site where bands we loved could put their music out there for free AND get paid for it. RCRD LBL is a new model and an experiment, putting great music out there for free and with absolutely no DRM. We hope you enjoy the music and support what we're doing by making RCRD LBL part of your daily music diet.
In some ways we're a music blog, written by people who want to bring you cool new music day in, day out. In other ways, we're a record label, championing, signing and partnering with bands we believe in. We'll have tons of exclusive tracks from everyone from Mos Def to Switch to Dirty on Purpose to Cold War Kids, but we're also working with an amazing roster of partner labels (see below) who will also be blogging and giving away music on the site. And since we're a blog, we'll also be pointing you to best of what else is out there on the web.
Here are our label partners:
* Warp
* Modular
* Dim Mak
* Downtown
* Drowned In Sound
* dirtybird
* Ghostly International
* SEEN
* Kompakt
* Turntable Lab

US Among Worst in World for Infant Death
From CNN:
"An estimated 2 million babies die within their first 24 hours each year worldwide and the United States has the second worst newborn mortality rate in the developed world, according to a new report.
American babies are three times more likely to die in their first month as children born in Japan, and newborn mortality is 2.5 times higher in the United States than in Finland, Iceland or Norway, Save the Children researchers found.
Only Latvia, with six deaths per 1,000 live births, has a higher death rate for newborns than the United States, which is tied near the bottom of industrialized nations with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia with five deaths per 1,000 births.
"The United States has more neonatologists and neonatal intensive care beds per person than Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, but its newborn rate is higher than any of those countries," said the annual State of the World's Mothers report."

Americans: Say Goodbye to Privacy!
What constitution? Deputy Director of Intelligence, Donald Kerr argues for a police state in America in the name of fighting the war on terror.
From an AP aticle by Pamela Hess:
"A top intelligence official says it is time people in the United States changed their definition of privacy.
Privacy no longer can mean anonymity, says Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence. Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguards people's private communications and financial information.
Kerr's comments come as Congress is taking a second look at the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act.
Lawmakers hastily changed the 1978 law last summer to allow the government to eavesdrop inside the United States without court permission, so long as one end of the conversation was reasonably believed to be located outside the U.S.
The original law required a court order for any surveillance conducted on U.S. soil, to protect Americans' privacy. The White House argued that the law was obstructing intelligence gathering."

Cassidy - B.A.R.S.
Cassidy's new B.A.R.S. album dropped last week. His 2005 I'm A Hustler album ended up being one of my favorite albums of that year so I was looking forward to hearing this follow-up. But while I was expecting more crossover thug bangers and slick verbals, Cassidy's near-death experience and time in prison has led to him making a more thoughtful and spiritual album... and I gotta say I'm disappointed. I understand why he made the album he did and I give him all the credit in the world for following his muse and using his experiences to try and create more positive art but sadly, it doesn't mean it's any good. Pakistan: WTF??!!!
From an AP report by Matthew Pennington titled, "Musharraf imposes emergency measures":
"Gen. Pervez Musharraf suspended Pakistan's constitution and deployed troops in the capital Saturday, declaring that rising Islamic extremism had forced him to take emergency measures. He also replaced the nation's chief justice and blacked out the independent media that refused to support him.
Authorities began rounding up opposition politicians, cut phone lines in the capital and took all but the state television station off air despite calls from Washington and other Western allies not to take authoritarian measures.
The U.S. called for Musharraf to restore democracy. However, the Pentagon said the emergency declaration does not affect U.S. military support for Pakistan and its efforts in the war on terrorism. [emphasis added]"

From an AP report entitled "Deaths Mark Grim Afghan, Iraq Milestones" by Jason Straziuso:
"Militants ambushed and killed six U.S. troops walking in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan - the most lethal attack in a year that has been the deadliest for the U.S. military here since the 2001 invasion. [emphasis added]The number of U.S. deaths in Afghanistan this year mirror the record toll in Iraq. Both conflicts have seen an increase in troop levels this year that has put more soldiers in harm's way, including those killed Friday while returning from a meeting with village elders in Nuristan province. Militants wielding rocket propelled grenades killed the six Americans and three Afghan soldiers. Eight U.S. troops were wounded."

Seal - "Amazing (Thin White Duke remix) (audio)
Before I get into it (n/h): pause, no homo, no Foley, no Ted Haggard, no Larry Craig and no Ahmadinejad on this post just in case:
Seal - "Amazing (Thin White Duke Main Mix)" [audio: YSI mp3 link | zshare stream/download via Discobelle]
I have a few crates of house music and other assorted electronica & dance music subgenres on wax in my apartment but in general I've never messed much with music in the euro-trancey vein. But f-ck me if Seal and Stuart Price (fka Jacques Lu Cont of Les Rythmes Digitales) haven't gone and made what might be the song of the year for me and created a masterpiece that marks a TOTAL return to form for Seal.
Seal is a dude who I'd written off years ago as having lost it somewhere between the legs of his supermodel wife Heidi Klum (which is not a bad way to go if you're gonna fall the f-ck off, frankly). Seriously though, I might have played this about 20 times in a row last night and there aren't too many hip hop records I'm doing that for right now, believe me! Best song he's done since "Killer" (and "Crazy" and "Kiss from a Rose" were no joke either so that's really saying something...). Super no-homo on the fact that this track sounds vaguely like Bronski Beat's "Runaway Boy" too but props for creating a song that, for once, truly lives up to its title....
UPDATE: thanks, Giant Step for a copy of the full album, System which I just got from my PO Box this morning. It's actually pretty good overall. Definitely recommended - especially for you estranged Seal fans who stopped checking for his sh-t years ago like me.

Shout to my dude Malcolm who directed this video and showed it to me something like three months ago at this point. Not sure what happened between then and now to prevent it getting out 'cos it was kinda late even then. Enjoy though....

New video: Gorillaz - "Rockit"
From the new D-Sides album in stores: 11.20.07 including a Limited Special Edition 'Dual-box' version that will feature exclusive packaging, two exclusive Jamie Hewlett prints, badges, stickers and a “Choose Pazuzu" patch (er, what?).
I shouldn't really dig 'em but the first two Gorillaz albums were pretty f-cking good. Dan the Automator's my dude but I think the second one co-produced by Danger Mouse might have actually been even better than the one he did!

Exclusive music: I-Wayne - "Rastafari Liveth (demo version)"
Off the hip hop beat for a second we're gonna check out some roots reggae right now, something I wish I had more time to get into in general on this site. This is from I-Wayne, a cat who had an unlikely hit on Hot 97 here in NYC back in 2005 with his single, "Can't Satisfy Her":
I-Wayne - "Rastafari Liveth (demo version)" [YSI mp3 link]
This track was actually done prior to the release of I-Wayne’s debut LP Lava Ground but was eventually also voiced by Neil “Diamond” Edwards. His new album Book of Life (cover above) just dropped this past Tuesday but don't ask me why his label wouldn't want to give away a promo mp3 from that album here instead! That would be too obvious, right? The music industry sometimes (*smh*), sigh....
