Chris Brown feat. T-Pain - "Kiss, Kiss" (video)
Forget all the other hits he's had this year for himself and others, just between this track and the Kanye "Good Life" collab from the past week we have to ask: when will T-Pain stop killin' em? Runnin' the game 'til 2008 and beyond, unquestionably....

Pre-Def Jam Rick Ross (album preview)
So speaking of Ricky Ross, check out these tracks from Rise To Power, an album recorded for Tony Draper's Suave House Records before The Bawss (stupidest nickname spelling ever!) ended up on Slip N Slide Records and then signed to Def Jam. This album supposedly contains exclusive tracks and guest appearances by Scarface, The Clipse, Devin Tha Dude, Big Duke of Boyz N The Hood and my dude Noah. The first single will be "Street Love" featuring Next although inexplicably I wasn't given a stream of that track - WTF? Check out these two tracks though and tell me what you think:
- "B.L.O.W." feat. Clipse & Om'mas
- "Get That Bread" feat. Big Duke of Boyz N The Hood
The Rise To Power album will be in-stores 9/18.

Razah - "Rain" (audio)
I was talking about this kid three years ago when he had a track DJ Enuff was bangin' called "Where Do We Go From Here." Then it disappeared and came back a copuple years later in a remixed version featuring Rihanna (and I think there was a version with Ricky Ross spitting on it too - WTF??) but still ended up going nowhere. Now it looks like homeboy's jetted from hir original label Virgin Records and somehow ended up on Def Jam. Did LA (or Hov or JD) make the right decision bringing this dude on the team (or should they have just stuck with current R&B Best New Rookie The Dream)? Let me know:

Still failing in Iraq...
Don't get the cartoon? Click on it for more details.
From an AP article by Matthew Lee and Robert Burns titled, "Little Progress Seen on Iraq Goals":
"Congressional auditors have determined that the Iraqi government has failed to meet the vast majority of political and military goals laid out by lawmakers to assess President Bush's Iraq war strategy, The Associated Press has learned.Click here for the full story.
The Government Accountability Office, or GAO, will report that at least 13 of the 18 benchmarks to measure the surge of U.S. troops to Iraq are unfulfilled ahead of a Sept. 15 deadline for Bush to give a detailed accounting of the situation eight months after he announced the policy, according to three officials familiar with the matter."

New Orleans: Two Years Later
And from an AP article by Mary Foster titled, "New Orleans Marks Katrina Anniversary":
"Prayers, protests and a lingering disgust with the government's response to Hurricane Katrina marked the disaster's second anniversary Wednesday, with a presidential visit doing little to mollify those still displaced by the storm.
Clarence Russ, 64, took a dim view of politicians' promises as he tried to put the finishing touches on his repaired home in the city's devastated Lower 9th Ward.
"There was supposed to be all this money, but where'd it go? None of us got any," said Russ, whose house was the only restored home on an otherwise desolate block.
Not far away, President Bush visited a school. "We're still paying attention. We understand," he said before heading to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, also devastated by Katrina.
But Gina Martin, who is still living in Houston after Katrina destroyed her New Orleans home, was unconvinced. "Bush was down here again making more promises he isn't going to keep. The government has failed all of us. It's got to stop," she said."

'(This is) holy ground for those who care about Black history....'
From the amNewYork paper today:
Click here for the full story and watch the video above for additional details.
"Lewis Greenstein owns a house that stands at the center of a wrenching controversy over the preservation of black history versus the revitalization of Downtown Brooklyn.
His home, 233 Duffield St., built in 1847, contains what he says is clear evidence that it was used to shelter and feed black slaves escaping along the legendary Underground Railroad to Canada.
But a half-million-dollar report commissioned by the city found otherwise, and now a city agency has recommended the use of eminent domain to bring down Greenstein's and other similar homes on the street to build a park and parking lot seen as the centerpiece of a major redevelopment project.
"We have strong evidence now to show this building was a feeding center for escaped slaves brought here along their route to freedom. We have shown this evidence to the city, but the city has chosen to ignore it," said Greenstein, an outspoken critic of the city's plans."

"Three British soldiers were killed by a bomb dropped by U.S. aircraft supporting them in a battle against Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan, the British military said on Friday. The incident on Thursday takes the number of British deaths in Afghanistan since the Taliban was toppled in 2001 to 73.
A single bomb was dropped by the aircraft.
Afghan officials have criticized foreign forces for killing dozens of civilians in the last two year with inaccurate air strikes."

What It Is... What It Was!
OG hip hop blogger Jay Smooth continues to show why he's still the best in the game with his Top Ten 70's Black Movie Trailers post at his excellent new(-ish) Ill Doctrine video blog. The above is a trailer from Superfly which is actually not on his Top 10 list but absolutely worth posting too of course!
Related:
- Already posted by many others but deserving of as much hype as it can get, Jay Smooth's hilarious but pretty much on-point 'Yes, Hip-Hop is Dead (For You).'
- Also kind of blaxploitation-inspired: I was lukewarm on the novel Soul City by journalist and TV talking head, Touré when I first started it a couple years ago but warmed up to it when I went back and finished it recently during a current energetic bout of book reading (four books in under 2 months 'cos who can f-ck with reading just this blog sh*t day in, day out?? ). Think Wild Style meets Wattstax meets Alice in Wonderland meets Anansi Folk Tales and you'll kind of get a rough idea of where Touré was coming from aesthetically and creatively with this imaginative short novel. Soul City would make a great animated movie or even real life fable if someone (Spike Lee, Tim Burton, Aaron McGruder?) had the courage to try and do it.

Colors goes corporate!
Unfortunately...
"A group of concerned East Harlem parents are calling on the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball to stop selling hats from a cap manufacturer that adds gang colors and symbols to some of their wares.
The hats, festooned with a crown above the "NY" or with a red or blue bandannas stitched in, are well-known short-hand signs for street gangs such as the Latin Kings, the Crips, and the Bloods, according to the Johnny Rivera, president of the Coalition to Protect Our Children, which is leading the fight."

Kanye West x Fall Out Boy mixtape
Sen. Barack Obama on 'The Daily Show'
Screamfest at MSG
Went last night expecting the same ole', same ole' - ended up seeing probably the greatest moment in modern hip hop history ever. After a full night where T-Pain, Yung Joc, Ciara and Lloyd all put on serviceable and entertaining sets T.I. came on and made people almost forget that 4-5 years ago MSG was the house that Jay-Z built.
He started with Wyclef shredding the national anthem Hendrix-style as his entrance theme before launching into "You Know What it Is" and then running through most of his past hits but it was the ending that was the truly amazing: first Jay came on to do his joint with Tip then Kanye came on and did "Can't Tell Me Nuthin'." All of a sudden 50 (who had come on earlier with Ciara then tore the house down with "I Get Money") was on stage and so was Diddy (who was on earlier with Joc) and the place errupted. Then Jay went into "Encore" and it was almost like the Fade to Black era again with everyone on stage still, the whole room throwing up the Roc-style diamonds and 50 and Kanye even exchanging pounds (!). Swizzy then came and did "Money in the Bank" and T.I. ended the night with an electrifying version of "What You Know" accompanied by Ciara and backed by Diddy, Kanye and 50 arm-in-arm (pause... but see above).
Honestly my description above doesn't even really do this justice: Miss Info is better, Shaheem at MTV probabaly better still. This is one night where I really wished I'd had my digicam though. I'm still scouring YouTube to see if anyone cauught any of this on film. Bottom line though: if you missed it, you should just go kill yourself seriously 'cos it was that amazing.

CIA report: 'systemic failure pre-9/11'
Former CIA chief, George "Slam Dunk" Tenet receiving the Medal of Freedom from President Bush in December 2004.
From Newsweek:
"A long-suppressed internal CIA report on pre-9/11 failures includes important new information about intelligence community squabbling and government fumbling in the months before the terror attacks.
An executive summary of the report, prepared by the agency’s inspector general’s office in 2005 and finally released Tuesday under orders from Congress, is unquestionably embarrassing for former agency director George Tenet and many of his top deputies. According to the report’s findings, the CIA under Tenet’s leadership repeatedly blew opportunities to disrupt the Al Qaeda network—and possibly even penetrate the 9/11 plot itself—because of “mismanagement,” a lack of strategic direction and a “systemic breakdown” within the agency’s Counter-Terrorism Center (CTC)."

Minneapolis on the Bayou?
Bush visits the Minneapolis bridge collapse site and promises a 'robust response' to rebuild the Interstate 35W bridge. As the poster of the above YouTube video notes though, "[Bush] then goes on to slam the Democrats for not passing his spending bill yet. The irony of slamming government spending just after a bridge collapsed seems to be lost on [him]..." (to say nothing of the difference here in comparison to his government's response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster). Let me just try to be optimistic though and say that maybe Bush at least learned his lesson from what will go down as one of the two biggest failures during his administration?
