MC Sundance of the Jazzy Five becomes the 2,752nd Victim of the 9/11 Attacks

From The New York Times:
"Leon Heyward emerged from the subway just as the second plane struck, piercing the south tower. As others fled, he helped evacuate disabled employees from 42 Broadway, where he worked for the city’s Department of Consumer Affairs, and when the first tower fell, he was caught in the churning plume of contaminated dust and smoke.
Within months he started to feel sick. A father of two who prided himself on being fit, Mr. Heyward found himself overcome with fatigue. He had seizures; his memory slipped.
Mr. Heyward was known by many in the music world by another name, MC Sundance, a member of the Jazzy Five, one of the first rap groups to form in the South Bronx in the 1970s. He liked to work out and play basketball, and landed a job with the city.
Last October, after developing lymphoma, Mr. Heyward died at age 45 in the Bronx, where he was born. He became, officially, the latest casualty of the Sept. 11 terror attack, and just after 10 on a gusty, dreary Friday morning, the name Leon Bernard Heyward was read for the first time at ground zero as the nation paused again to remember its losses."

AC - AC's Memoirs: 9/11 In Retrospect

I didn't post this on 9/11 proper when it was launched but this was one of the better and more original marketing campaigns I've seen in the hip hop blogosphere recently. Rapper, AC wrote songs tied into each of the main events that comprised the tragic time-line of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. They were originally released via his twitter account, @AConDemand, at the exact time they happened on the morning of the anniversary of 9/11 this year. Here are the tracks as they were originally released that morning:
8:46AM: FLIGHT 11 CRASHES INTO WORLD TRADE CENTER NORTH TOWER
"Wake Me Up"* (Prod. by Halo)
9:03AM: FLIGHT 175 CRASHES INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER SOUTH TOWER
"It's Really Happening" (Prod. by Phoenix)
9:38AM: FLIGHT 77 CRASHES INTO THE PENTAGON
"Take Me With You" (Prod. by Mike Cash)
9:59AM: THE SOUTH TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER COLLAPSES
"50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" (Prod. by C4 Sinistah)
10:10AM: FLIGHT 93 CRASHES IN PENNSYLVANIA
"The Morning Of" (Prod. by Rain)
10:28AM: THE NORTH TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER COLLAPSES
"Goodbye (feat. Jazzlyn Starr)" (Prod. by J. Glaze)
Which was then wrapped up as a single download link at the end of the campaign:
AC'S MEMOIRS: 9/11 IN RETROSPECT - full EP Link [download links: zshare | sendspace]
So rappers, please note: a tracks or freestyle a day or a week for a month, a year or whatever is not the only way to make your mark when you're trying to come up. So get creative!

September 11, 2001: the aftermath....
Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-VT) on rethinking Afghanistan, the (now) 'un-winnable war.' This was supposed to be the 'just' war in the so-called War on Terror but it's been getting worse and worse, with no end in sight, the Taliban actually getting stronger and the end-goal & exit strategy becoming less and less clear. You lie?? Yes, President Bush, you did....

Never forget: 102 Minutes that Changed America: World Trade Center: A 9/11 Timeline
Never forget: September 11, 2001
You know, I thought the passage of time would allow the memories of 9/11 to recede into the ether of my mind, but I have to admit that walking around downtown Toronto last weekend hearing & seeing the jets from the CNE airshow whizzing around buidlings and the CN Tower at crazy low levels kind of freaked me out.
Everyone else seemed completely oblivious (albeit maybe slightly annoyed by the noise) as they should have been. I mean, I used to love airshows too but the feeling I got hearing those jets made me realize that the fear or trepidation I had that something terrible was imminent even when common sense and evidence was to the contrary, was probably never gonna ever go away completely.
While I was not in Manhattan that fateful day eight years ago (I got a late start for work from my crib in Brooklyn as usual and never did make it into the city in the end and watched the whole horror of the day unfold on TV like I was a thousand miles away and not a 7 minute, 4 mile drive away like I actually was), I now realize I was as affected by the 9/11 attacks just as surely as if I'd run for my life from those burning towers.
I could try to dig deep in myself to search for something more profound to say about the whole thing on this date, or get political as you know I like to do every once in a while on this site, but instead I think urging everyone to acknowledge the day with some sort of service as was outlined in the link I posted earlier would be a nice way honor this anniversary and the memory of those who lost their lives in the attacks. And may God bring comfort to the families, friends & loved ones who continue to mourn their losss.

Promo for Jay-Z's 9/11 MSG Show/Fuse TV Broadcast
This is basically a straight-up commercial but I'm posting it anyway for 2 reasons: 1. it's a charity show and 2. to ask how BET let the broadcast rights for this show go to f-cking FUSE television? WTF??? That is a MAJOR FAIL on their part. I guess they were too busy renegotiating to get another season of Hell Date!

"We can't kill our way to victory..."
So says the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , Adm. Mike Mullen about Afganistan. He also says the U.S. is "running out of time" to win the war in there. [CNN]
So on the seventh anniversary of 9/11 this is where we're at:
Bin Laden STILL not captured or dead, despite McCain claiming he has the plan on how to to do it!
Schumer sees gaps in US anti-terror efforts. [AP via Newsday]
The failure of Bush policy post-9/11 - "The "global war on terror" is over -- and we lost." [Salon]
Al Qaeda still thriving. [CNN]
Meanwhile there are hot spots in Pakistan and the former Soviet Union that the US is now stretched too thin, because of commitments in Iraq, to address militarily (if need be).

John McCain claims he knows how to capture bin Laden....
If that's true, Olbermann made a great point in his Op-Ed tonight on MSNBC: what's he waiting for then - why doesn't he advise the appropriate, responsible authorities RIGHT NOW??

Six Years Later....

Bin Laden: still alive and free!
Truth be told, I'm still a little f-cked up over what happened all those years ago but life moves on and, not to be glib but, I'm now focused on another war today but you still gotta take a minute and reflect, right?
National Post: "General David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, declared yesterday that President George W. Bush's troop "surge" in that country is working, but warned that a rapid withdrawal before next summer would have "devastating consequences" on security."
US advised to reduce number of Iraq troops.
Maliki: American troops [still] needed.

CIA report: 'systemic failure pre-9/11'

Former CIA chief, George "Slam Dunk" Tenet receiving the Medal of Freedom from President Bush in December 2004.
From Newsweek:
"A long-suppressed internal CIA report on pre-9/11 failures includes important new information about intelligence community squabbling and government fumbling in the months before the terror attacks.
An executive summary of the report, prepared by the agency’s inspector general’s office in 2005 and finally released Tuesday under orders from Congress, is unquestionably embarrassing for former agency director George Tenet and many of his top deputies. According to the report’s findings, the CIA under Tenet’s leadership repeatedly blew opportunities to disrupt the Al Qaeda network—and possibly even penetrate the 9/11 plot itself—because of “mismanagement,” a lack of strategic direction and a “systemic breakdown” within the agency’s Counter-Terrorism Center (CTC)."

Rudy Giuliani: America's Mayor?
Not according to the International Association of Fire Fighters and the above video they just released yesterday. I don't really care if homeboy, who amazingly is the lead candidate, ends up becoming Republican nominee for the 2008 presidential campaign but, like with Bush's rep for being so-called 'strong on terror,' it's always irked me that Giuliani has developed a rep for being so great during 9/11. I mean what exactly did he do on 9/11 that was so amazing or outside the scope of what he was supposed to be doing as mayor?? If it hadn't been for 9/11 he would have left office with a rep for having been a divisive, bullying and authoritarian mayor. Watch the video and decide for yourself if they have a point though.
