What It Is... What It Was!
OG hip hop blogger Jay Smooth continues to show why he's still the best in the game with his Top Ten 70's Black Movie Trailers post at his excellent new(-ish) Ill Doctrine video blog. The above is a trailer from Superfly which is actually not on his Top 10 list but absolutely worth posting too of course!

- Already posted by many others but deserving of as much hype as it can get, Jay Smooth's hilarious but pretty much on-point 'Yes, Hip-Hop is Dead (For You).'
- Also kind of blaxploitation-inspired: I was lukewarm on the novel Soul City by journalist and TV talking head, Touré when I first started it a couple years ago but warmed up to it when I went back and finished it recently during a current energetic bout of book reading (four books in under 2 months 'cos who can f-ck with reading just this blog sh*t day in, day out?? ). Think Wild Style meets Wattstax meets Alice in Wonderland meets Anansi Folk Tales and you'll kind of get a rough idea of where Touré was coming from aesthetically and creatively with this imaginative short novel. Soul City would make a great animated movie or even real life fable if someone (Spike Lee, Tim Burton, Aaron McGruder?) had the courage to try and do it.
