Homeboy just spun at a post-BET Awards party for T-Pain at a ridiculous Hollywood Hills mansion apparently also used for the finale of the MTV show, 'The Hills' (and supposedly owned by a 28 year old dude - I hate the guy and I've never even met him!) although truth be told, the party only got really crunk when T-Pain got on the 1's and 2's and started spinning himself. This is not on official remix obviously, just some Frankenstein Pro Tools sh-t of some of the freestyles out there. Probably the Beat of the Year already at this point though, right? I've been meaning to post something from Gucci Mane's Back to the Traphouse album for a minute now cos even though it came out at the end of last year, I think it's one of the most slept-on hip hop albums of the past year. As a matter of fact, until The Cool Kids and Wayne joints leaked/came out, it was pretty much the only hip hop album I was listening to regularly (sorry, Roots!). New music: The Cool Kids - The Bake Sale EP
Blog and hipster hype be damned - The Bake Sale is actually really legit good! If I have one major criticism it's that the album (or is it EP?) is a bit samey sounding after a while although it makes for a quick listen over its barely 30-plus minutes & 10 tracks and I've been playing it repeatedly over the past few days which is something I haven't done with too many albums recently. If you miss that minimalist 808, drums 'n synth effect sound a la Mantronix or early Rick Rubin Def Jam productions then this record is for you 'cos The Cool Kids is bringin' '88 back.

In The Heights (TV spot)
N/h on this post but I saw this show last week with my mom who was in town and it was incredible. This TV spot doesn't really do it justice and I'm no expert but I have to say this was the best Broadway show I've ever seen and totally deserving of being the most nominated production at this year's Tony Awards. I think it would make an amazing movie a la Chicago too if done right.
There's a heavy hip hop element to the show (i.e. there's rapping, which is actually pretty decent, as well as singing) so for heads who would never f-ck with this kind of thing, I'm telling you, put your prejudices aside and check it out. This may sell the show short and be a lazy reference because of the heavy Latin element in both, but this is really like West Side Story for the hip hop era. As I was watching it, it made me think of all the great cinematic, A-list hip hop artists like Nas, Dre, Jay-Z etc. who would probably be inspired to do amazing things with this artform if they saw this musical.
Had a great weekend too: I saw your boy Usain 'Lightning' Bolt CRUSH the 100m world record under less-than-optimal conditions on Saturday night at the Reebok Grand Prix track meet and then made it to Summer Jam last night as well. I'll get into that once I find some good video links to base a post around though....
