2006 YEAR END WRAP-UP: Albums
I know nobody gives a f*ck about this in friggin' May but I never posted a list of my favorite albums at the end of last year even though I pretty much had it mapped out then so here it is now. What held me up was that I was gonna try and write some commentary but I never really had the time or desire.
The only thing I will say for now though is that my album of the year Doctor's Advocate by The Game, like his debut The Documentary before it, is a hip hop classic to me and not just by today's standards. F*ck what the haters or the so-called hip hop critics say or think: five, ten years from now, people will pull out this album and realize how great it is. Even if you aren't convinced just on the strength of the music, the fact that even after a (then red-hot) G-Unit kicked him out of the crew and his mentor Dr. Dre turned his back on him, he was still able to make a amazing sounding album while the Unit has since crashed and burned is an incredible story in itself to me. To use hip hop blog nerd parlance: Game won.
Big up's to Dogg Pound and Snoop Dogg too for making really good albums: never mind the South, is the West (coming) back? Anyway, here's the list for whatever it's worth:
1. The Game - Doctor's Advocate
2. Dogg Pound - Cali Iz Active
3. DJ Spooky - In Fine Style
4. Rhymefest - Blue Collar
5. DJ Green Lantern - Alive on Arrival (mixtape album)
6. Robin Thicke - The Evolution of....
7. Various Artists - Jamaica to Toronto...
8. Beck - The Information
9. Ghostface & Mick Boogie - The Broiled Salmon mixtape
10. Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds
Aloe Blacc | Birdman & Lil Wayne | Clipse | E-40 | Gnarls Barkley | J Dilla | Jibbs | Jim Jones | Kids in the Hall | Matthew Africa & DJ Eleven feat. Too $hort | mstrkrft | Mylo | Nas | Snoop Dogg | Tahiti 80 | Thom Yorke | T.I. | Vikter Duplaix | Young Jeezy
BONUS: Rhymefest - "Angry Black Man on an Elevator" (prod. Lil Jon) - one of my top 10 picks looking real solid for 2007 with this hot new joint. Please someone explain to me why heads f*ck with Lupe so hard (n/h) and almost completely sleep on this dude though?? Extra points to 'Fest for hooking up with my dude Jon and letting cats know that he can do more than make crunk sh*t. While You've Got the Day Off....
Trust me, the deals are retarded and the sale's still going on cos I didn't make it 'til yesterday. Normally super-overpriced high end street wear brands for Old Navy prices and they still have decent sizes in a lot of the good stuff: t-shirts $12 ea. or 2 for $20, BBC gear for 75% off??! I went in (of course).

Cam (and everyone else) just lost, forever!
Get used to seeing more of Curtis "50 cent" Jackson looking like this!
I kind of got out of the posting regularly about hip hop news game on this site a while ago, but this (from AHH) is too momentous to ignore:
Queens, NY rapper 50 Cent may have good reason to brag on his new single "Straight to the Bank." Glacéau, makers of vitaminwater, was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company today (May 25) for $4.1 billion dollars in cash [emphasis added]. 50 Cent invested in Glacéau in 2004 and owns 10% of the company [emphasis added]. Sources told AllHipHop.com that Coca-Cola's purchase of Glacéau earned the rapper an estimated $400 million dollars. Glacéau markets and sells popular energy drinks named vitaminwater. The company markets and distributes a grape flavored energy drink inspired by 50 Cent named "Formula 50." "This is an outstanding opportunity for both of our companies to build an expanded active lifestyle business, first in the United States and then around the world," said Muhtar Kent, president and chief operating officer of The Coca-Cola Company.Click here for more.
If these numbers are real, do y'all understand what this dude just did on the business tip?!! That sh*t is amazing! Not rapper-amazing, like real big business/mogul/titans-of-industry amazing. Chris Lighty is prolly gonna get a $60M check of this deal as his manager. Even though he just pushed his album back, if you think he gives a f-ck that everyone is saying all the singles he's dropped from the Curtis album so far are trash, guess again. He's not even in the same league as the rest of these rap cats any more. Cam and everyone else just lost... forever.

Here We Go Again?
Thank God, we got lucky last year. Will it be the same this hurricane season?
"The 2007 Atlantic hurricane season will be more active than normal due to warmer ocean waters, with as many as ten hurricanes, and three to five of them could be major, the U.S. government's top climate agency predicted on Tuesday.Click here for more from the Reuters article "Active Atlantic hurricane season seen" as seen in Scientific American.
"We are right now in ... a period of more active hurricane seasons," said Conrad Lautenbacher, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "It just takes one hurricane to make it a bad year for everyone here."
NOAA foresees 13 to 17 tropical storms this season, with seven to 10 developing into hurricanes. Three to five could be major ones of Category 3 or higher with winds over 110 mph (177 kmh), the agency said in its annual forecast.
An average Atlantic hurricane season brings 11 tropical storms, of which six reach hurricane wind speed of 74 mph (119 kph), including two major hurricanes, NOAA said. The hurricane season, which officially starts on June 1, typically peaks between August 1 and late October.
Earlier forecasts for the season also have predicted the return of an active pattern this year. A year ago, just 10 storms formed and no major hurricanes reached the United States."

Conservative Gun Nuts and the Virginia Tech Massacre
This is slightly old but I still had to post....
Remember when, in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech shooting, those right wing, conservative nutjobs were arguing that more liberal gun laws and allowing guns on campus might have saved some students' lives?
For a nice little preview of what life on college campuses would be like with guns in the mix, barely a week or two later a college student at Fresno State murdered one acquaintance and wounded two others after a fight over a playstation!
And now these from a week or so ago:
"The National Rifle Association is urging the Bush administration to withdraw its support of a bill that would prohibit suspected terrorists from buying firearms." (click here for more from "NRA: Don't Ban Gun Sales to Suspects")
"A gun-rights group plans to protest New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's lawsuits against two Virginia gun shops by holding a "gun giveaway" in a Fairfax County government building." (click here for more from "Group plans Fairfax 'gun giveaway'")
If it's not already patently obvious to you, these people are f-cking crazy....

Live tonight in NYC: KRS-One & Marley Marl!!!
Just in case though, check this out from the e-blast I found out about this show in:
"More than 20 years after Boogie Down Productions and MC Shan & Marley Marl traded dis records in what was the first higly publicized rap beef of many to come, KRS and Marley will come together on stage at The Fillmore. No longer beefin about the origin of Hip Hop from their now infamous “The Bridge “ and “The Bridge is Over” musical debate, Krs-One and Marley Marl are set to make history with their upcoming release Hip Hop Lives.
In support of their brand new release, this somewhat surprising MC/DJ duo are set to blaze a path of Hip Hop unity in response to current attacks on lyrical content from the media and claims that the genre is dead from their peers. Out to prove that Hip Hop is indeed alive and well, Krs-One and Marley Marl are embarking on a three city tour, New York, D.C. and Philadelphia to spread the word. It ain’t so much about where the music came from, its about where its going."
Also just added: Joell Ortiz & Skillz. More details here. And view the video for Marley & Kris' "Hip Hop Lives" single here.

- Amy Winehouse feat. Pharoahe Monch & Jay-Z
BTW: Thanks to my dude Shawn at Universal Music, I caught Amy live last week with the Dap Kings at the new Highline Ballroom venue. It was definitely a solid show and she sounded good although she never really "took it to church" the way Keke Wyatt and Teedra Moses did at a really good TVT Records soul music showcase I was at a couple days later. And I swear to God, homegirl was so drunk and slurrring her words in between songs that I could not understand a friggin' word she said and I'm actually from England! I also wish she'd done "In My Bed" and maybe had Ghostface there to do "You Know I'm No Good" but I figure if he's even done it one of the now many times she's played NYC, that's probably it. Sneaky Sound System - "Pictures (Styalz Fuego remix)"
More new talent spotlighted at the Kitchen - you know how we do! Funnily enough, I was reading about this Australian hip hop producer (!) Styalz Fuego last night in Scratch mazgazine when I saw an email from his production company this morning. Turns out he was the dude that did the first aborted (?) single "Not A Criminal" from Chamillioanire's forthcoming Ultimate Victory album featuring Kelis. Check out this remix he did of electro act Sneaky Sound System: very Timbaland-esque (keys-wise, that is). Now we're really gonna be surging!
Lt. Col. William Boyett to Robert Gates: "What the f-ck do we do now?"
From an AP article titled "Pentagon Prepares 35,000 Troops for Iraq"
"The Pentagon on Tuesday alerted more than 35,000 Army soldiers that they could be sent to Iraq this fall. In Congress, House Democrats defiantly pushed a plan to limit war funding to two-month installments.
The deployment orders signed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates would allow commanders to maintain the buildup of troops through the end of the year if needed. President Bush has ordered nearly 30,000 additional troops to Iraq to quell a spike in violence, particularly in and around Baghdad. There are currently about 146,000 U.S. troops in Iraq."

So What Are We Waiting For??
From "We have the technology to tackle global warming, scientists say" in today's Times of London:
"Tackling global warming need not cost the Earth, a panel of UN scientists said today.In the third in a series of reports, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said that keeping the rise in temperatures to within 2C would cost only 0.12 per cent of annual gross domestic product if governments exploited new technologies to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
“It’s a low premium to pay to reduce the risk of major climate damage,” Bill Hare, a Greenpeace adviser who co-authored the report, told Reuters news agency after the culmination of marathon negotiations which ran over their four-day schedule.
“If we continue to do what we are doing now, we are in deep trouble,” added Ogunlade Davidson, co-chair of the IPCC, which includes experts from some 120 nations."

The Top 25 Hip Hop Albums of All Time?
PE: architects behind the greatest hip hop album of all time?
I sent this list of my Top 25 Hip Hop albums of all time to Joey a while ago by email, but everyone else posted theirs to their sites in response to his call to action so I had to follow suit. My list is kind of blend of my favorites and what I thought were the best/most important albums in the genre so I added an honorable mention section too 'cos 25 wasn't really enough (and I wanted to acknowledge more of my personal faves). Besides that, I also deliberately kept it to one album per artist 'cos if I didn't, it would have been all Dr. Dre, EPMD and De La Soul albums on the list:
1. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
2. Dr. Dre - The Chronic
3. N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton
4. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the 36 Chambers
5. Ice Cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted [Literally N.W.A-meets-PE: still thrilling to listen to all these years later]
6. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders [Low End Theory used to be my fave Tribe album but this has held up better over time IMHO. Play 'em back to back and tell me I'm wrong]
7. Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
8. Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Beatdown
9. De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising [not mad at anyone who argues De La Soul is Dead is better]
10. Nas - Illmatic
11. Main Source - Breakin' Atoms
12. Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
13. Notorious BIG - Life after Death *
14. Fugees - The Score
15. Eric B & Rakim - Paid in Full
16. Kanye West - Late Registration
17. Jay-Z - The Blueprint
18. Gangstarr - Step in the Arena
19. Mobb Deep - The Infamous
20. Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
21. Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca & the Soul Brother
22. Jungle Brothers - Done by the Forces of Nature
23. Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
24. 50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin' *
25. Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
(* - not personal top 25 faves but you have to have these as you prolly should 2pac too cos they all changed the game in their own ways.)
Honorable mentions:
* 2Pac - All Eyez on Me
* Run DMC - King of Rock
* The Game - Doctor's Advocate
* Cypress Hill - s/t
* EPMD - Strictly Business
* Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx....
* Beanie Sigel - The B.coming
* Organized Konfusion - s/t
* Dead Prez - RBG
* LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
* T.I. - Trap Muzik
* Brand Nubian - One for all
* Goodie Mob - Soul Food
* Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
* Slick Rick - The Great Adventures of...
* Biz Markie - Goin' Off
Respect to G. Rap who's one of my fave MCs of all time even though I don't think he ever made a truly great album top to bottom (but came close) and maybe I should have Whut? Thee Album on there too although I never play it any more and it sounded, as do most of Reggie's albums, kind of dated (in a bad way) last time I did.
Hmm... at some point I still gotta do a post on my fave albums of last year, LOL. At this point I really am racing to get that done before Memorial Day Weekend like I joked last year!
