This has been out a couple weeks already but since I missed posting it and Wale's Attention Deficit was pretty much my favorite hip hop album last year (yeah, I said it!) and his Back to the Feature mixtape was an under-appreciated banger too (as compared to the universally-acclaimed original Mixtape About Nothing), I feel like I need to support this and post it still.

As I mused on twitter, 50 delivers arguably the second best album of his major label career and it bricks. And Wale bricks with what I think is a tremendous debut album for him? WTF is going on?
I could try to make an argument about label marketing might triumphing over artistic merit nowadays but both these dudes are signed to Interscope, the record label that has come to epitomize the modern major label 'machine' and all the promotion & marketing resources that implies. Besides, they both had really solid marketing pushes for their album launches from what I could tell so either I'm off in my judgment of the music (and I don't think I am), Interscope fell off or there's something else going on here. Rizoh has some theories on what happened to Wale and Eskaygloats about comments on the 50 situation here.
So here comes 50's new single. I love this song, its R&B/hip hop done right to my ears, but momentum seems to be going against 50 at this point and I don't see this song turning it around for him. Disagree?

To celebrate the release of Wale's major label debut album today, here's a couple club music remixes of tracks by him, one a B'more club take on a track from his debut 100 Miles and Runnin' mixtape and the other of a track from the new Attention: Deficit album:

BTW: I think Attention: Deficit is a fantastic album and I'm not even from the DMV! On top of that, I wasn't always a Wale believer either. In fact I thought the Mixtape About Nothing was way overrated & over-hyped but the Back to the Feature mixtape turned me around (pause) and the album itself delivers: a complete listen top-to-bottom with virtually no rewind material, great production, real songs with melodies, hooks and concepts and good spit game from Wale that's not just all swaggerific throwaways. I asked on twitter which debut was better: Wale or Cudi's? Obviously I'm biased 'cos I don't love Cudi's album too tough (although I will admit, its grown on me) but only one dude there has really engaged me in a discussion on the topic so I open it up here even though getting people to comment on this site is like pulling teeth. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
