Why Edwards Never Caught On
At least according to Time. I know folks who read this site think I'm riding for Obama, even though I haven't officially endorsed anyone, but I actually probably have more in common with the more progressive Edwards philosophy-wise so I'm sorry to see his voice will no longer be part of the campaign dialogue.

Hersheys Wants Out if a Nickel Bag Gets Sold in the Park?
From an AP article:
"The Hershey Co. is halting production of Ice Breakers Pacs in response to criticism that the mints look too much like illegal street drugs, the company's president and chief executive officer said Thursday.
Ice Breakers Pacs, which first hit store shelves in November, are nickel-sized dissolvable pouches with a powdered sweetener inside. The pouches come in blue or orange and bear the Ice Breakers logo.
Members of Philadelphia's police narcotics squad said the mints closely resemble tiny heat-sealed bags used to sell powdered street drugs. They charged that the consequences could be serious if, for example, a child familiar with the mints found a package of cocaine."

2007 YEAR END WRAP-UP: Albums
For those who even give a f*ck, if my singles list got you mad, I don't even wanna imagine what you'll think of my album list. I won't get into a lengthy dissertation with my thoughts about the year in albums because really, who cares? But I will say this: I think 2007 was a GREAT year for hip hop albums and albums in general. Haters may disagree but f*ck 'em, they just weren't listening and to be honest, it wasn't that hard to find good albums in hip hop no matter what your tastes. To wit (in alphabetical order though 'cos, even though I had most of my picks in rough order of how much I liked them, I really couldn't decide on a most favorite album to top the list):
- Common - Finding Forever
- Consequence - Don't Quit Your Day Job
- Interpol - Our Love to Admire
- Jay-Z - American Gangster
- Kenna - Make Sure They See My Face
- Alicia Keys - As I Am
- Talib Kweli - Eardrum
- LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
- Lupe Fiasco - Lupe Fiasco's The Cool
- Plies - The Real Testament
- Radiohead - In Rainbows
- Sa-Ra - The Hollywood Recordings
- Turf Talk - West Coast Vaccine
- Kanye West - Graduation
- Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Honorable Mentions: Playaz Circle, Soulja Boy, Ticklah, Hurricane Chris and, Rich Boy.
Biggest disappointment: Cassidy - B.A.R.S. - this was a tough one for me: I LOVED his last album but this actually thoughtful and deeply personal album was pretty much a total miss for me.
Sorry I missed the Ghostface, Scarface, Beanie Sigel and Freeway albums cos there's a strong chance that at least some of those albums would have probably been on this list too if I'd heard them.
Flame away....

2007 YEAR END WRAP-UP: Singles
S'funny. I was looking at my favorite singles of 2006 list and got confused when I saw T.I.'s "What You Know" at #1. I thought I must have missed a year of doing this or something because it felt like that song had come out years ago now! Well I checked my King album and lo and behold, that was only a year ago after all. How time flies, huh? Anyway, like we always do around this time in these parts, not necessarily the best, best-selling or most-acclaimed songs, just a list my favorite singles from the past year:
- Seal - "Amazing"
- UGK feat. Outkast - "International Player's Anthem (I Chooose You)"
- Rihanna - "Umbrella"
- Kenna - "Say Goodbye to Love"
- Lil Mama - "Lip Gloss"
- Nu World Hustle - "Fresh"
- Crime Mob - "Rock Yo Hips" [I also really liked that "Circles" single too!]
- Mark Ronson feat. Daniel Merriweather - "Stop Me"
- Keyshia Cole feat. Missy Elliott & Lil' Kim - "Let It Go"
- DJ Khaled - "We Takin' Over"
- Camp Lo - "Black Hollywood"
- Kia Shine - "So Krispy"
- Fantasia feat. Big Boi -"Hood Boy"
- Tum Tum - "Caprice Muzik"
- Collie Budz - "Come Around"
- Plies feat. T.I. "In Love with my $" [I know "Shawty" was really the 'record' and I liked that too but I just really dug this buzz 'street single' a LOT - why wasn't this on the album??]
- Stephen Marley feat. Damien Jr. Gong Marley - "Traffic Jam"

Everything's Falling Apart....
From today's Washington Post:
"President Bush's White House early on scrapped a custom archiving system that the Clinton administration had adopted under a federal court order. From 2001 to 2003, the Bush White House also recorded over computer backup tapes that provided a last line of defense for preserving e-mails, even though a similar practice landed the Clinton administration in legal trouble.
As a result, several years' worth of electronic communication may have been lost, potentially including e-mails documenting administration actions in the run-up to the Iraq war.
White House officials said last week that they have "no reason to believe" that any e-mails were deliberately destroyed or are missing."
Yeah right! Click here for more.

Raheem Devaughn - Love Behind the Melody is IN STORES NOW!
Don't be shocked if homeboy comes in top 5 next week and has the whole music industry going, "Raheem, who??"
Sorry it's been a bit slow around these parts: been busy at work plus not that much inspiring me to post right now. I will say this though: all those bloggers who were talking up the Turf Talk album a few months back were right - that sh-t is friggin' GREAT. Not that I thought 2007 was a bad year for hip hop albums personally like the perennially, grumpy haters that are always complaining but the West Coast Vaccine album reminded me yet again that there was a time when hip hop albums could be repeat listens and great from top to bottom.

The fight to save hip-hop's birthplace
From today's amNY newspaper:
"Residents of 1520 Sedgwick Ave., the place where in the mid-1970s a young D.J. later known as Kool Herc started spinning records at parties in the basement recreation room, are announcing today their plan to buy the building -- for only a few thousands dollars per apartment -- from private interests, and keep it affordable.Click here for the full article. More at Eskay's.
1520 Sedgwick is credited as the birthplace of hip hop. "It's like Graceland or the Grand Ole Opry, it's the birthplace, where it all started from," Herc said. "It's a piece of the American dream and we just want to preserve it.""

Amplive's Radiohead Remix album project shut down!
It's The Gray Album all over again! From a press release serviced by Robbie of 1776:
"Fresh on the heels of a story in The New York Times, Cali producer and In Rainbows remixer Amplive has received a cease & desist letter from Radiohead's publisher Warner/Chappell, demanding that the Bay Area DJ put a halt to his Rainydayz Remixes project, an 8-track remix album of re-envisioned In Rainbows songs featuring guest spots from the legendary Too Short, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Del the Funky Homosapien of Gorillaz, Chali2na of Jurrasic 5, and a host of others. What this means for the future of the project is currently unclear, but the originally proposed release date of January 10th has now been postponed indefinitely. As it would seem, the folks at Pitchforkmedia.com have already come out in support of the producer, hoping in a recent news story that "all parties involved can reach some kind of agreement where art-- not profit or bureaucratic malarkey-- prevails."
Here's a link to a copy of the Warner/Chappell letter and letter response from Amplive himself (and video above):
"First and foremost I would like to thank everyone who has been digging my remixes. I put a lot of time and hard work into them and I am glad people are appreciating them. I was especially excited about the exclusive verses I was able to get from Del the Funky Homosapien, Chali2na from Jurassic 5, the soul singer Codany Holiday, and K.Flay, who were all also super excited about contributing to the project. I really feel if Radiohead's team was able to hear these remaining remixed songs, they would feel differently. So I am writing this letter to ask that if you have any post/streams/mp3s of the songs from Rainydayz Remixes that you remove them immediately. Complying with the cease and desist, these remixes can't be publicly distributed or made commercially available. Even though I was offering them for free in conjunction with the In Rainbows download and had good intentions because of my appreciation for their music, the powers that may be are not seeing it the same way. Hopefully I can find a way for Radiohead to support this FREE release made available only to those who purchased their album. For now I am cooperating with the "C & D" only because it has come from Radiohead's team and I will respect that. BUT if that changes I am happy to resume my release plans. Again, I appreciate your support in posting them, but because of the situation at this time, it is illegal. Thanks for you help." - Amp Live
This music biz has gone bonkers. And I think Amp is 100% right - I'd stake wild paper that if Thom Yorke knew about this, he'd be totally down with letting him release this project the way he was planning.
Unrelated: Nadreams, keep ya head up - I still love you and you'll always be with me in my heart even if you're not here in NYC any more.
