3 Years Later: Mission Accomplished?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

US admits Iraq war is terror 'cause' - "Report says that 11,000 attacks worldwide shows the war has become driving factor for extremists." (click here to read more | related: "3,000 terrorist attacks worldwide in 2004, 11,000 in 2005 - you do the math.")

LATEST IRAQ BLUNDERS BY US WORSE THAN REPORTED.

Violence Uproots 100,000 Iraq Families.

Central morgue in Baghdad can’t keep up with workload.

And for those right wing nuts who claim that the media is just not reporting the "good news" in Iraq, NBC "Today Show" reporter Richard Engel says: "the situation on the ground is worse than the images we project on television."

Pay no attention to the above though. Mission Accomplished? Yes it was: Halliburton to be paid 96% of overcharges.

Sippin' and Spinnin' for the weekend....

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
It's goin' down! Yung Joc: don't try to fight the movement!

New music to ride out to for the weekend in your Donk, Box or Bubble:

- Marques Houston Feat. Yung Joc
"Like This" - this kid is killin' 'em on this collab with what is starting to seem like his trademark "crunk-snap" sound. He's Ma$e meets Young Jeezy. (related: Yung Joc interview)

- Gangsta Boo feat Bun B & Big Pokey "Sippin and Spinnin'" - not quite "Stay Fly" but the same formula is used here to pretty devastating effect. Play it a few times and it'll get under your skin. Not quite sure why this pre-free Pimp C era track didn't make more noise?

- Q-tip feat. Andre 3000 & Consequence "That's Sexy" - I kind of like it (where's Consequence?? I don't hear him even though he was credited as being on this track on the site I pulled this mp3 from) but can the "other Tip" (sorry, Kamaal, times change) win with this in today's marketplace?

Hip Hop in 2006, get used to it:

- "Blinged out" IM slang pendants.

The East Flatbush Project - I can't believe they're still around a decade-plus later. It seems like they've made a career off that one (admittedly incredible) "Tried By 12" single.

Check out beats by The J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, the crew that brought you "No One Will Do" by Mary J Blige, "Don't Get Caught" by Young Jeezy and "Rumble Young Man Rumble" by Juelz Santana (apparently).

A folk music cover of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” by Brent Runyon.

New T-Pain podcast.

Muh'f-ckin' Mick Jagger to star in a TV sitcom - WTF??

Finally - looking for something to do TONIGHT after today's activity?

DJ Morsy
with the Nanachill crew & Sound Advice at Royal Oak in W'burg (click here for more details).

Or for those with more highbrow tastes: the HRO orchestra performs with Stefan Jackiw at NYU's Skirball Center at 8PM. Click here to buy tickets.

And while you're resting up tomorrow, check out my man (and former Source magazine editor) Selwyn's new TV show "The Chop Up" - "where BET news cuts the world down to bite-sized chunks [!]." (click here for a trailer the swordplay or here for air times)

"I base my foreign policy decisions on things I think are true. One, I believe there's an Almighty...."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Mission Accomplished: pre-emptive endless war around the world is a go!

A couple weeks ago my man Skrybe emails me the following message:

"I'm an Army dude that peeps your blog out all the time. Anyways, I dunno if you caught the latest report that the Army's banning all body armor except their own, but that's a pretty big issue with a lot of us right now, considering how pitiful their body armor is. Point being, check this.

Apparently people within the military are trying to pull some games of their own to keep that money "in house." (aka: "Let's make sure the big armor deal goes to our good buddy Halliburton" or something along those lines) Just thought maybe you could use that."

Well thanks for that Skrybe. After reading that I decided that it's time I put up a few links that I've been sitting on that may give you pause about whether the GOP is really the party that supports a strong military and national security. After all, according to Bush and his peoples, our boys are gonna be in Iraq for a while. The least he can do is take of them while they're over there and when they come back.

Read on and decide for yourself:

- More on the army ban on self-bought body armor.

- Iraq war hero billed $700 for the body armor he was wearing when he lost his arm in a bomb attack - WTF?!!

- A Pentagon report says the US military is being stretched to its breaking point.

But the Pentagon has reneged on its offer to pay a $15,000 bonus to members of the National Guard and Army Reserve who agree to extend their enlistments by six years, according to Sen. Patty Murray (D-Seattle). (read more here)

I guess they figure between keeping the National Guardsmen and women in Iraq under false pretenses and against their will plus lowering standards to recruit old geezers, criminals, drug abusers and high school dropouts, they'll have more than enough troops to stay in Iraq for years and to invade Iran.

Still not convinced?

It's not just the generals, Iraq war vets think Bush is bogus.

And check the stats: Democrats vs. Republicans - the Military Service Records of various U.S. Politicians and Opinion Leaders

At least my peoples know what's up.

But to end: consider one vet's suggestion (in his obit) - "send acerbic letters to Republicans." Sounds like a (the start of) a plan to me.

Jive Talkin....'

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Something for everyone? Raheem DeVaughn & Too $hort: the Young Turk of Soul and the OG of the Pimp Slanguistics.

New sh-t from the Blow The Whistle album! Too $hort feat. Rick Ross & Pimp C "Money Maker" - WTF, how did this get out? No-one at the label even has this track except the A&R!

Another great Too $hort podcast interview via Mp3.com.

And it's like this dude is everywhere now: peep him on the new Shawnna feat. Too $hort, Ludacris, Lil Wayne & Pharrell "Gettin' Some (remix)" - video coming soon.

Raheem DeVaughn
's brand new "You" video (Hi | Med | Lo) - look for this dude to invade NYC in May and June with a series of live shows across the city.

My Latinos represent with the new "Reggae & Reggaeton" mixtape by DJ Furious and the Party Patrol's infamous "Puerto Rico" Rob.

BTW: not Jive-related per se (other than the Clipse seem to be focus of the debate about what actually constitutes the demarcation of the "two" sounds) but The South vs. East Coast/NY hip hop debate continues.

Meanwhile beyond West 25th street:

Large Professor has a solid-sounding new instrumental album called Beatz Vol 1 - but does anybody care?

Dr. Dre's rapping daughter??!!

And finally, should I be admitting to kinda diggin' that new Rihanna single "SOS" (mostly because of the Soft Cell "Tainted Love" sample though)?

A First Hand Report from the Big Easy

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This is a special guest post from my girlfriend Ndidi who just returned from a week-long community service project trip with Habitat for Humanity in New Orelans:

Katrina may seem like ancient history to some of us, but its’ devastating effects are still being felt daily in New Orleans.

The extent of the destruction is larger scale than one could imagine from the pictures or TV. You have to see it with your own eyes to realize the true horror of what happened.

Even now, 8-9 months later, a huge portion of the population has still not returned. Businesses are closed because they have no one to staff them. Traffic lights still don’t work in many areas.

The majority of schools are still closed, as are many of the major hospitals. Students at colleges like Dillard University are attending classes in cubicles in a hotel conference room. And officials were still finding bodies in houses as recently as a few weeks ago.

Most of the Ninth Ward and some other neighborhoods still look like ghost towns, and it’s hard to entice residents to return when they don’t know if they will l be the lone residents in a row of rotting houses.

Race and class injustices are still evident in how the city can decide to restore electricity to certain area, while leaving it off (to dissuade residents from returning) in an adjacent area that has a history of extreme violence.

In the midst of these devastating circumstances, there are certain signs of hope and human resilience. This spring students and others from all over the country came to help out in the rebuilding efforts. Groups worked with programs like Habitat For Humanity, Helping Hand, FEMA (yes, even FEMA is trying to do something right!), Common Ground. One such program was Habitat For Humanity’s “Collegiate Challenge” during which hundreds of students came to work in Musicians Village, a construction effort of 81 new houses in the upper Ninth Ward which was supported by Branford & Ellis Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr.

The complex issues surrounding the rebuilding of New Orleans, and the return of its residents will take a long time to resolve. But these efforts by volunteers are a good first step. And remember to Keep New Orleans in Your Prayers.

Ed. add-on's:

- From yesterday's The New York Times: "There have been scads of well-intentioned [Katrina benefit] compilations... But one thing all these tributes have in common is that, while [it] remains by far [the city]'s most popular musical export, they all ignored the thrilling — and wildly popular — sound of New Orleans hip-hop, the music that has been the city's true soundtrack through the last few decades." "I am committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president....''

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

"The pre-election statement by Diebold’s CEO that he would work to deliver the election to Bush was apparently no idle boast. In five states where the new "foolproof" electronic voting machines were used, the vote tallies differed substantially from the exit polls. Such a disparity is unusual. The chances of exit polls in five states being wrong are no more than one in one million." (Source: LewRockwell.com)

It boggles my mind how scandal after scandal has hit the White House yet Bush still manages to keep on truckin' while one group of wacko GOP Vietnam vet haters were able to completely derail John Kerry's presidential campaign.

A week and some change ago came this story that you would think would be one more nail in a Bush administation coffin that never seems to close:

"Key figures in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in 2002 had regular contact with the White House and Republican Party as the plan was unfolding, phone records introduced in criminal court show.

The records show that Bush campaign operative James Tobin, who recently was convicted in the case, made two dozen calls to the White House within a three-day period around Election Day 2002 — as the phone-jamming operation was finalized, carried out and then abruptly shut down." (click here to read more)

"But, Ian" you cry. "This has to be an isolated incident. There's NO way the GOP would have really tried to steal the election, is there?"

Yup, sadly there is. Peep some of these links about election fraud and electronic voting I've been sitting on waiting for the right time to post:

- "A watchdog group says electronic voting machine tampering may have made a difference in 2004 presidential election." (click here to read more)

- Elections Official: Some Voting Machines Could Be Hacked.

- Professor Steve Freeman of the University of Pennsylvania says it's easier to cheat democracy than Las Vegas.

"We have found the weapons of mass destruction...."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Is George W. Bush the worst president in 100 years?

I know the polls are really starting to indicate it but how much more evidence do the American people need to deduce that this dude is a f-cking shameless liar and war monger?

And peep this little bombshell from last week:

"On Monday, former Secretary of State Colin Powell told me that he and his department's top experts never believed that Iraq posed an imminent nuclear threat, but that the President followed the misleading advice of Vice President Dick Cheney and the CIA in making the claim.

Now he tells us." (click here for more)

At least he's coming clean but Colin Powell should be ashamed of himself for having gone along with this corrupt adminstration for as long as he did.

I mean even highly respected conservative thinkers (and a couple of right wing media pundits idiots) are now saying this dude is a f-ck-up. I don't think I need to add anything when it's gotten to that point do I??

Special Easter Holiday Post

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

After watching the actually quite good movie version of the quasi-Christian fable writ as children's fantasy novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe on a plane back from the West Coast earlier today, I figure I'd use the Easter holidays as an excuse to post some religion-related links I've been sitting on for a while. First though....

Sploid on the roots of Easter and Easter around the world (with more related linkage here and here).

And as this holiday draws to a close:

- "There is no such thing as a 'Christian politics.'"

- Jesus's walk-on-water miracle explained?

- Not that the majority of Americans would buy it based on this news.

No disrespect to the faithful as the most holy of holidays and central to Christian beliefs draws to a close but is anyone else as embarrassed as me to live in a country this backwards? They worry about the Afghan Taliban when there's virtually a Christian equivalent right here? Meanwhile the religious right's hypocrisy knows no limits.

"If there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is...."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Bush has been quoted several times in the past as saying. So I was suprised, nay shocked to hear the following this past week about the adminstation that pledged to restore "honor and integrity" to the White House back in 2000:

"Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby testified to a grand jury that he gave information from a National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq to New York Times reporter Judith Miller in 2003 with the specific permission of President Bush [emphasis added], according to a new court filing from the special prosecutor in the case." (click here to read more)

Or maybe actually I wasn't:

The White House is cracking down on leaks -- except their own, of course.... (via AMERICAblog.com)

Bush says he doesn't have to obey the newly-signed Patriot Act

Bush wants to make it easier for the IRS to sell your tax filing info.

"
President Bush and other top officials in his administration used the National Security Agency to secretly wiretap the home and office telephones and monitor private email accounts of members of the United Nations Security Council in early 2003 to determine how foreign delegates would vote on a U.N. resolution that paved the way for the U.S.-led war in Iraq, NSA documents show." (click here to read more)

"Bush's 'hatchet man' in the NASA press room, George Deutsch, resigned from the agency following revelations that he lied on his resume." (click here to read more)

"In a seven-year-old secret program at the National Archives, intelligence agencies have been removing from public access thousands of historical documents that were available for years, including some already published by the State Department and others photocopied years ago by private historians."(click here to read more)

I could go on but it looks like it's nice outside today.

As a recent New York Times editorial put it:

"We can't think of a president who has gone to the American people more often than George W. Bush has to ask them to forget about things like democracy, judicial process and the balance of powers — and just trust him. We also can't think of a president who has deserved that trust less."

Couldn't have said it better myself....

On My Sh-t? It's Goin' Down

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Coming soon... FINALLY!

Let me just say I haven't seen this well executed a major label marketing album release campaign in hip hop since The Game's debut dropped last year. Between the movie tie-in's and ads all over internet and total radio and video dominance, it's no wonder T.I. killed everyone on the charts this week.

I've long been a T.I. booster but I won't lie, I am semi-disappointed with the KING album personally although I can't quite put my finger on why. It's full of great songs, top notch production and the the kind of spit game that demonstrates why T.I. is one of the best doing it in the South, if not the entire country right now. For some reason though it doesn't quite hold together as well for me as a complete album as Trap Muzik and Urban Legend did.

Like I promised though, while NYC gets all frothed up over the supposed resurgence of the hometown hip hop scene, The Kitchen stays focused on what's really poppin':

Young Joc "It's Going Down" - my favorite record right now by a guy my man Sledge reckons is the new Ma$e for this Southern hip hop era we are in right now. Apparently this has been the hottest record in the "A" for a minute. He's bringing "classic" 2004 crunk back with a snap twist to it just when snap music loooked like it was gonna take over completely, LOL. Dude also gets points for the cheesiest but possibly best album title of the year: New Joc City. (related: watch the video)

T.I. feat. Q-tip "Why You Wanna (remix)" - by Mick Boogie. I don't know if this is official or not but this was out last Thursday or Friday about four days after I heard the original. WTF? They haven't even serviced this as a second single yet. BTW: also check out Mick's Ghostface mixtape The Broiled Salmon.

The Clipse feat. Heron, Stimuli & King Pin Slim "On My Sh-t" - Are VA's favorite brick-flippers more Southern or East Coast orientated? Join the debate. (real audio link via Hiphopgame.com)

Yo Gotti feat. Young Buck & Allstar "Gangsta Party (remix)" - I actually like the original with Bun B and Eightball better but come with a remix - why not (other than the first version ain't even a hit yet, that is)? Apparently this Memphis-based kid has beef with America's favorite Oscar-winning collar-poppers though. (last mp3 link via Still Listen...)

Finally on a lighter note, what happened? Did J-Lo fall off or has her ass always been overrated?

Tax (cut) and Spend Conservatives

"So rapid is the rise of the US national debt, that the last four digits of a giant digital signboard counting the moving total near New York’s Times Square move in seemingly random increments as they struggle to keep pace.

The clock’s owner, real estate developer Douglas Durst, knew such a problem could arise but hadn’t counted on it so soon. “We really expected it to be quite some time,” Durst said. “But now, with the pace of debt growth only increasing, we’re looking at maybe two years and certainly before President George W Bush leaves office in ’09,” he said. New York Hip Hop is Back?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Just Blaze takes a break from trying to carry NYC on his back.

Busta Rhymes feat. Swizz Beats (prod. DJ Scratch) "NY Sh-t" (clean dirty instrumental) - so in the past couple weeks I've been feeling this little groundswell of a buzz around town about how NYC/East Coast hip hop is about to make a comeback. Apparently this "NY Sh-t" record and this artist are leading the way. Me? I've talked at length on this site about how the South won the war for hip hop supremacy in 2005 (also ask Sickamore) and I haven't seen or heard anything that's gonna change that least of all Papoose or this new Busta tracks that Flex & Hot 97 have been banging ad nauseum in a seeming attempt to whip up for some hometown support for a moribund NYC hip hop scene.

New York used to run this game because they made the best records, had the best MC's & producers and set the trends that the rest of the country followed. I hate to admit this but being from NYC nowadays is kind of wack and nobody cares about what's going on here. NY rappers now bite from their southern counterparts in an effort to stay relevant and the best sample 'n' chop beatsmiths on the East coast sound like dudes in 60's still making singles with that Sun recordings sound when George Martin had just produced Sgt. Peppers with The Beatles and Phil Spector, Jimi Hendrix and Pet Sounds were splitting wigs.

I hope the East and NY come back but, truth be told, I ain't holding my breath waiting for it to happen. But for those of you still carrying the torch, here's some more music and reading to keep yall occupied while the rest of us are rockin' our T.I., Clipse and Young Joc records:

More Papoose mp3's via Nah Right - is this guy really the MC to lead New York to MC supremacy??
