FELA! is now on Broadway!
The video above was from when this musical on the life of afrobeat legend and pioneer, Fela Kuti was playing off-Broadway. The musical was so well-received and blew the minds of people you probably respect that it has now been revived with the money backing of Jay-Z and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith. I know Broadway is a rich ticket for many but Fela is the truth - as important as James Brown, Bob Marley, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder etc. in the black music canon that you should try and see this if you can. I'm off to check it out tonight. Get discounted tickets for Fela! HERE.

More on Sacha Jenkins x Beatnuts' Deez Nutz
I know I mentioned this before but here's a 'trailer' now:
And a monologue from Deez Nuts by G-Bo The Pro on Latinos in hip hop (if you don't know who G-Bo The Pro is, just kill yourself - or get familiar):
And in case you're still saying, "Deez Nuts - WTF?", here's the plug:
"The 2009 NYC Hip-Hop Theater Festival presents The Beatnuts starring in Deez Nuts, a workshop production Written and Conceived by Sacha Jenkins."

Video: The Hip Hop Shakespeare Company
I remember going to see The Bombitty of Errors, an "ad-raptation" of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors years ago that was actually really, really good. The musical In The Heights also did an amazing job of incorporating hip hop into the Broadway musical format and let's not forget Big Boi's Big ballet suing music from Outkast. It's good to see hip hop being mixed with these so-called 'higher' art forms to create something fresh or at least different. After all isn't that, and not tired f-ckery like how many times you've been shot, what hip hop's supposed to be about?

Contest: win tickets to see The Actor's Rap! play
I mentioned that I was going to see this play a few weeks back but didn't follow up to say that it was really enjoyable: funny and pretty on-point in terms of its examination of the current state of hip hop. If you've seen the movies Drop Squad
and Hollywood Shuffle some of the set-up's and lines may seem a little stale but there's definitely enough fresh material to still keep you engaged and laughing. If you're not sure but are still curious to see The Actor's Rap!, The Kitchen is giving away ONE PAIR of tickets for the matinée performance on March 1 (at 3pm) as well as a promo t-shirt. All you have to do is send an email listing what you think is the all-time worst performance by a rapper-turned-actor in a major Hollywood flick and I will select someone at random to win the tickets. Contest ends at 12noon on Tuesday (Feb 26).FYI:
The Actor's Rap! Play opened Friday, February 8th and will run for a limited engagement at the ENGELMAN RECITAL HALL at the Baruch Performing Arts Center (55 Lexington Ave at 25th Street).
All shows Thursday - Saturday at 8 p.m.
Saturdays at 3 p.m. & 8 p.m.
