Already Platinum Pied....

I was hating on those who weren't on board the bandwagon saying Ray was an incredible movie based on the buzz and being amped after seeing the trailer. But after finally seeing the movie last weekend, I have to say that, Jamie Foxx's great performance notwithstanding, Ray was kind of just aight to me. I mean it was wasn't bad in any glaring way, in fact I enjoyed it fine, but it wasn't the transcendent movie experience I was expecting based on all the rave reviews. Ironically, everyone is telling me that Sin City lives up to the hype of it's trailers though.

HypeBeast

"Ultra Mag [sic] is the most important group in all of hip-hop...." - Wes breaks down the hip hop "Shot Callers" at the swift chancellor report.

"I smoked a blunt with 2Pac" - that and Combat Jack's four other gulliest moments working in the music industry at BdotC. Great read.

And it wasn't an early April Fool's gag (I don't think). You can laugh but I think this is probably actually an encouraging sign about where hip hop might be going, no?

But what's good at my other site?:

- Yam Who? - "Masters at Work meets The Neptunes" is as good a guess as any.

- The Root Down

- Fly DJ Furniture

- Platinum Pied Pipers - blowing up FAST. Don't sleep.

- "Love Afro Life" - Jump N Funk. I hope this hasn't cramped Rich Medina's style too bad. (I can't front, I'd be crushed if that happened to me though.)

- "This is grown man hip hop ish so if you're still trying to rock jerseys and Tims, this is probably not for you." - RyanKenny.

Join The In Crowd, you know it makes sense (for grown folk only... probably).

While for the rest of y'all...

The BRAND NEW 12" from Supreme Clientele is a go. Holla at your local mom and pop vinyl seller or online retailer in the next week or so or head directly to Fat Beats. Single #2 has the Mighty Mos Def back on some real hip hop ish displaying "Excellence" as he rips some raw freestyle rhymes while the flipside action has Medina Green doing it "Slow & Tender" over a nice Supa Dave West beat. Sh-t is cook coke if I do say so myself. Streams coming soon.

Papoose "Sharades" - blowing up in the streets of NYC right now.

Slim Thug "Incredible Feeling" (win | real | prod. by Jazze Pha) - f'real, when is duke's album dropping? He's put out a gang of hot records already including a redonkolous remix with Hovi and was featured on one of the breakout singles of the year ("Still Tippin'") but there's still no sign of Already Platinum which seems to keep getting pushed back. What's really good?! Doesn't his label know this kid could really blow (no homo) since the takeover is almost complete.

And the original architects of that midwest flow, Do or Die (Bone Thugs, know), are back with a new album called D.O.D. Sh-t is aight, a little inconsistent, but the Kanye-produced single "Higher" is that real pimp sh-t. (wma: hi | lo | quicktime: hi | lo | EPK)

Meanwhile, a dude I haven't talked to in a very long time, Dan Charnas, steps into the blog game real big with his first post. Peep (true school) game. (spotted via Jay Smooth)

Former teen urban pop stars dropping some not-that-bad music:

- Omarion feat. Pharrell "Touch" (Due to DigiWaxx's "no hot linking" request, delete the "DELETE THIS" I put in the link URL before attempting to play this mp3)

- Ray J feat. Fat Joe “Keep Sweatin’” - new banger for the clubs or wannabe "Yeah"?

But for hipsters who just can't take their R&B straight up, how are OG Ron C's screwed and chopped R&B mixtapes?

While finally, for all y'all sneaker fiends who didn't make it to that party a few weeks back to check 'em out live, here's a link to the Adidas Superstar 35th Anniversary Series.
